Today's member spotlight is the versatile and analytical Nicholas Johnson!
Nicholas Johnson is a Central New York native who took a unique road to where he is today. He earned his Bachelor's in Mathematics from Binghamton University then sold cars while finishing his Master's in Mathematics Education at Le Moyne College in 2016. That led him to the classroom, where teaching high school math unexpectedly sparked his love for data. Building Excel automations and custom gradebooks opened his eyes to what was possible with data, and he has been chasing that ever since.
That curiosity led Nicholas to found Ataviz Consulting in 2020. While building the business, he took on federal consulting work with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Federal Aviation Administration, building Tableau dashboards for national patient safety databases and leading analytics teams through major platform transitions. Over time, Ataviz Consulting evolved from a data analytics practice into an operations-focused advisory firm built on a simple idea: better systems become better businesses. Today the firm helps executives cut through the noise around technology, AI, and process improvement to build organizations that actually run the way they should.
As Director of Technology at Big I New York and Big I Connecticut, Nicholas leads modernization across multiple affiliated insurance organizations. He partners with senior leadership on IT strategy, workflow automation, change management, and enterprise systems, while also driving responsible AI adoption and building the data infrastructure that helps the organization make smarter decisions. It is a role that pulls together everything he has built across his career, and one where he gets to create real, lasting impact for the independent insurance agents that they serve.
Nicholas is also putting his experiences into a book on Decision Intelligence, due out later this year. The book is rooted in something he has seen play out across consulting engagements, federal projects, and operational leadership: organizations rarely struggle because they lack data. They struggle because the biases, politics, and human dynamics in the room determine whether that data ever actually changes a decision. The book offers a practical framework for operational leaders who want to build teams and organizations where evidence genuinely drives outcomes, not just validates the ones already made.
Outside of work, Nicholas is a husband, dad of two young kids, and proud owner of two dogs. When he gets a free moment, you will find him on the basketball court, the golf course, or enjoying a cold beer by the pool.
He is always happy to talk operations, data, AI, or technology with anyone who is curious. Do not hesitate to reach out!
Join us in congratulating Nicholas on today's unique member spotlight and we encourage you to connect with him!
