Selecting and purchasing new emergency apparatus can be one of the most expensive and challenging aspects of running a fire department. If you're a current or aspiring chief officer or a member of an apparatus committee, we have a course that you will find helpful!

FD Apparatus (FPT 196) will be offered on Tuesday evenings at 6:15pm during the Fall semester. This 3-credit course is taught by Deputy Chief Zachary Smith. You do not need to pursue a degree to take this informative class.

Zach is an experienced career chief, apparatus design engineer, and a member of the NFPA 1900 Technical Committee (Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles, Automotive Fire Apparatus, Wildland Fire Apparatus, and Automotive Ambulances).

Topics covered in the course include: Types of apparatus, types of chassis, determining your department apparatus needs, procurement/purchase concepts, common fire truck definitions, electrical systems, pumps, aerial devices, safety systems, body compartmentation, final design considerations, mid-point and final inspections, apparatus maintenance, and more.
