The EU AI Act already sets extra obligations once a model crosses a compute threshold. US export controls have spent three years tightening on the exact chips that make local inference possible. Consumer GPU prices keep drifting up because the same memory supply feeds datacenters that outbid you without noticing.

None of that is a conspiracy. It is just what happens when a technology gets useful enough to regulate and scarce enough to price.

So the machine humming in your closet is not a hobby rig. It is a grandfathered-in copy of something that gets harder to acquire every quarter. Weights you already downloaded cannot be un-downloaded. Hardware you already own cannot be un-sold.
