New Habits Consulting

New Habits Consulting Building positive habits, ABA-based Education and Consulting for Lasting Behavior Change What I love most about my job is teaching.

My journey in the behavior science field began over 16 years ago when I was given the opportunity to work in a clinic serving children with Autism. A college student at the time, I had no idea I would fall in love with this work and go on to earn my Master’s degree, and furthermore, become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). I have worked with clients (early intervention to early adulthood)

, caregivers, teachers and other professionals, teaching skills to each along the way. I am most fulfilled by spreading the knowledge of behavior and seeing others progress towards their goals. My time outside of work is spent with my family and doing my best to contact my top values of health, learning, independence and creativity.

✨ Exploring Treatment Options for Tics ✨

Not sure what to do if Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) isn’t effective? There are other evidence-based options to consider:

💊 Medications: Antipsychotic medications like Haloperidol, Risperidone, and Aripiprazole can help—but consider the benefits vs. side effects, especially for children.

💉 Botox Injections: These can temporarily manage tics by relaxing the affected muscles—an effective and safe option for some.

⚡ Deep Brain Stimulation: A last-resort surgical intervention for adults with severe, treatment-resistant tics.

Your path to relief is unique—always consult with a specialist to find the right fit.

🚀 6 General Ways to Minimize Tics 🚀

Tic disorders can be challenging, but there are evidence-based strategies to help manage and reduce their impact! Here are six general ways to support tic reduction:

💪 1. Exercise – Regular physical activity reduces stress and provides an outlet for movement.
🧘 2. Stress Reduction – Identify and minimize stress triggers to help manage tic frequency.
🎯 3. Activity Engagement – Focus-based activities like puzzles can shift attention away from tics.
😴 4. Sleep – Proper sleep hygiene lowers stress and promotes overall well-being.
🥗 5. Nutrition – While no specific diet is required, limiting processed foods may help.
🌍 6. Environmental Factors – Adjust surroundings to reduce tic triggers when possible.

Many people confuse tics with stereotypies, but they are distinct movement patterns with different characteristics!

🔹 Tic Disorders
✔ Involuntary, rapid, jerky movements
✔ Often preceded by a premonitory urge
✔ Non-rhythmic & can feel uncomfortable
✔ The person may not even realize they did it

🔸 Stereotypies
✔ Voluntary and often rhythmic
✔ No premonitory urge
✔ Can be redirected or stopped
✔ Typically soothing or comforting

Understanding the difference is key to finding the right support and treatment! 💡 If you or a loved one struggles with tics, CBIT (Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics) can help!

🧠 Understanding Tics & How CBIT Helps 🧠

Did you know that Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is a proven, non-medicated approach to managing tic disorders?

🔍 Why Do Tics Happen?
✔ Premonitory Urges – Many individuals experience a physical sensation (itch, tension, or discomfort) before a tic occurs.
✔ Reinforcement – When the tic happens, the urge disappears, reinforcing the cycle over time.

💡 CBIT helps break this cycle by teaching awareness and alternative responses to reduce tic severity and frequency.

The precise cause of tics remains unknown, but here’s what we do know:

📌 Genetics: A strong genetic link exists, with ~30% of parents with tic disorders also having a child with the same condition.

📌 Anxiety: Stress and anxiety often increase the likelihood of tics, leading to other behaviors like nail-biting or throat-clearing to manage stress.

🌟 While the exact triggers are complex, understanding these factors is key to providing the right support.
