Are high engine hours actually bad?

Not necessarily.

When evaluating a higher-hour used boat, look beyond the hour meter and ask:

Was maintenance performed on schedule?
Are service records available?
Have there been overheating issues or major repairs?
Is there evidence of deferred maintenance?
How does the engine perform today?
Does the asking price appropriately reflect the hours?

A mechanical inspection can also provide valuable information through diagnostics, compression or leak-down testing, fluid inspection, and performance under load.

There’s no magic number that makes an engine “too high hour.” The better question is whether the boat's condition, history, inspection, and price make sense together.

A boat with more hours can still be a great buying opportunity when it has been regularly used, professionally maintained, and backed by solid service records.

The number on the hour meter is only one part of the story. Condition, maintenance history, inspection results, and price all matter when determining whether a boat is truly a good value.

Sometimes the best buy isn’t the boat with the fewest hours — it’s the one where condition, history, and price all come together.

Five questions every smart boat buyer should ask:

✅ Why is the boat being sold?
✅ Are maintenance and service records available?
✅ Has the boat ever been damaged or had major repairs?
✅ When was it last used, and how has it been stored?
✅ Can I schedule a sea trial and marine survey before closing?
