RIP creator of the Trapper Keeper, E. Bryant Crutchfield. I coveted the revolutionary file folder concept, the glossy cover, the satisfying “snap” of the trap-keeping.

My mother refused to cave to the hype, so I stuck with the Pee-Chee style from the 1940s. Only the Trapper Keeper came customizable and with its own notebook.

A photographer client needed to workshop her artist statement, so co-cultivated a beautiful, blooming introduction to her forthcoming photography show.

Working with her on a concise, compelling statement felt like replanting this succulent:

*building on a rocky bed of compressed ideas;

*embedding intention with words (and organic soil) that work multiple ways, grow new branches of thought;

*setting down blooms as word art for a general audience; and

*trimming the lose ends so that each word makes a visible impact.

Not since reading Toni Morrison’s _Beloved_ have I read about a character who goes by my nickname “Patsy.” Her name was “Patsy, the Thirty Mile Woman.”

In Nicole Dennis Benn’s novel, _Patsy_, is a character who leaves Jamaica to pursue a life in the US with her lady love.

Both novels feature women grappling with expectations society has placed on them; both characters appear beloved.

Happy Memorial Day. Thank you to the soldiers, hospital staffers, first responders, service workers, and gunned-down teachers who gave their lives for The Greater Good.

This weekend, my fam and I visited my grandmother’s unmarked grave with renewed vows to erect a tombstone.

How to memorialize a person in few words? What images to carve into tombstone that speak a thousand stories?

Please let me know if you have suffered a loss and would like me to write them a eulogy. I will do so for free, in honor of those we lost too soon.
