"The two storms knocked out power to 2.7 million customers in Florida as well as the entire island of Puerto Rico, which has more than 3 million residents. (Nearly 12,000 power customers in the state and about 9,000 on the island remained without power as of Sunday night.) Still, much of the grid in both places bounced back faster than it had after some past hurricanes, in part because of efforts in Florida to harden power networks by burying power lines and replacing wooden poles with steel or concrete."

But solar power was especially critical for many residents. One reason: Rooftop panels, coupled with batteries, let people keep their lights and appliances humming during and after the storms, without having to worry about downed power lines or finding fuel for generators.

The green electricity source faces obstacles in Puerto Rico and Florida, where sun power largely held up during Hurricanes Fiona and Ian.

The Inflation Reduction Act calls for reviving a credit that ended last year, making it retroactive for all of 2022 and extending it for a more than a decade. Homeowners who front the cost of energy efficiency improvements, from new doors and windows to more efficient appliances, would be able to claim up to $1,200 a year or 30% of the total cost at tax time.

"It really strengthens the grid for everybody," says Abigail Ross Hopper, president of the Solar Energy Industries Association.

Homeowners could also get up to 30% of the cost of home solar back at tax time, retroactive to the beginning of 2022 and running through 2032, with the amount tapering until the end of 2034. The same incentive would apply to storage.

Some of the Act's $369 billion in energy and climate spending aims to make it easier and cheaper for Americans to live more sustainably.

A team of researchers from ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science led by Professor Jacek Jasieniak from Monash University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering has created perovskite cells with a conversion efficiency of 15.5 percent that allows more than 20 percent of visible light through, a press release states.

This improves the stability of solar windows while allowing more natural light in, which means the amount of visible light passing through the cells is remarkably now reaching glazing levels, increasing their potential for usage in a wide range of real-world applications.

Are you one of the millions of Floridians who saw a 15% increase in your electric bill this year? Let's fix it, not just for next year but for all the years to come.

According to FPL, Florida had about a 15% increase in the average price of electricity to ultimate customers, going from 10.81 to 12.45 cents per kilowatt-hour. Urban Grow Group is helping homeowners lower their energy bills by increasing general knowledge of solar panels and creating avenues of access to top-quality solar products.

Join us every Wednesday at 6 pm (est) on Zoom for our free community education on "Rooftop Solar Installation" for Florida homeowners.

“The Putnam Public Schools made a quantum leap forward in terms of sustainability and cost reduction by choosing to go solar at both the high school and middle school,” said Adam Teff, general manager of TitanGen. “Through this addition of solar, the district offset approximately 70 percent of their annual utility consumption and reduced their costs by approximately $55,000 a year.”

Putnam School District of Putnam, Connecticut has offset 70% of its total electricity load with a 752-kW solar project. Greenskies Clean Focus financed

According to the US Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration, the nation averaged 0.85 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per kilowatt-hour generated. Thus, an average 400 W solar panel generating 1.5 kWh per watt per year* will offset 510 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.

A single solar panel offsets a carbon emissions equivalent exceeding that of ten mature trees. The average residential solar installation, roughly 7,000 watts, offsets the emissions equivalent of more than 180 trees. A single acre of solar panels with a capacity of 250,000 watts can be expected to offset more carbon emissions than 6,500 trees.

Using broad average values of 48.5 pounds of carbon sequestration per year for a mature tree, versus 0.85 pounds of emissions offset per kilowatt-hour of solar electricity, it's clear that some tree clearing is acceptable from an emissions standpoint.

Solar Around the World: Nigeria

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy with a population of an estimated 200 million people, has an installed electricity capacity of 12,500 megawatts but the national grid only provides 4,000 MW at peak, leaving businesses and citizens heavily reliant on diesel-powered generators.

The Energy Commission of Nigeria says the country spends $22bn annually on fuel for generators.

The price of diesel, not subsidised like petrol, has nearly tripled to 800 naira a litre ($1.93). Most of that increase came in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“There has been an increased growth in demand (for solar), I think really driven by the spike in diesel prices this year,” Victor Ezenwoko, Daystar Power chief commercial officer said.

The Energy Commission of Nigeria says Africa’s largest economy spends up to $22bn annually on fuel for generators.
