In the final weeks of the Civil War, when the Confederacy was already crumbling, a strange and desperate little battle unfolded in the swamps south of Tallahassee that kept the city out of Union hands until the very end. 🌲 It happened at a place called Natural Bridge, where the St. Marks River disappears underground and lets you walk right across it.

In early March of 1865, Union troops landed on the coast and pushed inland, hoping to take Tallahassee, the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi still standing. Standing in their way was a ragtag defense of whatever Florida could scrape together, including teenage cadets from the West Florida Seminary, old men of the home guard, and wounded soldiers. They dug in at the natural land bridge and held the crossing through repeated attacks, until the Union force finally pulled back toward the sea.

The war ended just weeks later, so the fight changed little in the grand scheme. But because of that stand, Tallahassee remained the one southern capital never captured in battle. ⚔️ Those young cadets went back to their classrooms, and their school eventually grew into Florida State University. I think about that every time I hear about the game day crowds in Tallahassee. Did you know Florida's capital was defended by schoolboys in the last days of the war?
