Have you ever wondered where the term “65 Roses” comes from? The story dates back to 1965, when a 4-year-old heard the name of his disease for the first time and pronounced cystic fibrosis as “65 Roses.” Today, many young children still use the term “65 Roses” when talking about CF. But making the disease easier to say does not make it any easier to live with.

in 1910, Theodore Roosevelt delivered his famous “Citizenship in a Republic” speech at the Sorbonne in Paris during a European tour following his Smithsonian–Roosevelt African Expedition.

Best known for its “Man in the Arena” passage, the speech outlines TR’s views on the duties of citizens and the responsibilities of democratic society. He emphasized action over criticism, arguing that progress depends on those willing to strive, risk failure, and pursue worthy goals.

He stressed that a nation’s success rests on discipline, character, and engaged citizenship—and that democracies require both strong individuals and high standards of leadership. He praised those who dare greatly, noting that “the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…”

More than a century later, Theodore Roosevelt’s message remains a powerful call to courage, civic responsibility, and perseverance in the face of criticism.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas delivered a televised broadside against progressivism on Wednesday, a political philosophy he described as an existential threat to America and the principles that founded it 250 years ago.

“Progressivism seeks to replace the basic premises of the Declaration of Independence and hence our form of government,” Thomas said in a speech at the University of Texas Austin Law School connected to the nation’s upcoming milestone birthday.

Thomas, the Supreme Court’s senior conservative member, spoke broadly, not referencing specific contemporary events or political figures to make his case. But his comments come at a critical time for the sharply divided country and the Court.
