Carpenter ants love our wooded, canopy heavy Tallahassee, and they are experts at using your landscaping to get indoors. Any tree limb, shrub, or vine touching your house is a bridge they will happily cross.

Once inside, they tunnel into damp or damaged wood to nest, quietly weakening the structure over time. You might notice large black ants indoors or little piles of what looks like sawdust.

That fresh layer of mulch and the leaves piling up along your foundation might look tidy, but to roaches they are a five star resort. Moist, dark, and full of hiding spots right against your house, it is exactly where they want to be.

Once they are thriving inches from your walls, it is a short trip inside through any little gap. Fall leaf buildup only makes it worse.

On the first cool, sunny days of fall, you might notice clusters of orange, spotted beetles gathering on warm walls, or sneaking indoors. Those are Asian lady beetles, and they are a little less charming than the classic ladybug.

They gather in big numbers looking for a warm place to wait out the season, slipping through cracks and gaps around windows and siding. They will not damage your home, but nobody wants dozens of them on the ceiling.

Sealing them out is the best defense. Seeing them cluster on the house already? Let's keep them outside where they belong.
