There's a particular vantage point you get when you're the trainer who flies in, runs the workshop, and leaves β not the person who sits in on staff meetings or knows the office politics. You see things that people inside the organization sometimes can't.
Over the years, walking into more than 70 different organizations to train on Motivational Interviewing from a cultural lens, I started noticing the same pattern everywhere. Different cities, different populations, different funding streams, but the same silence in the room when a case example touched on race or culture. The same practitioners quietly relieved that someone finally said the thing they'd been afraid to bring up with their own supervisors.
That repetition; across dozens of organizations that had no reason to be similar is what convinced me this wasn't a "them" problem. It was systemic. And it's why I wrote "Antiracist Behavioral Health Practices: A Practitioner's Guide."
Being an outside trainer means you don't inherit the organization's blind spots. You bring your own lens. And sometimes that's exactly what a team needs to finally name what's been sitting unspoken in their clinical work.
Over the next several posts, I'll share:
- What consistently showed up across dozens of organizations, regardless of size or mission
- The moment I realized AMCO needed to be a book, not just a workshop
- Chapter insights born from watching hundreds of practitioners in hundreds of rooms
- Why an outsider's perspective can sometimes cut through what internal training can't
If you've ever brought in outside training and felt the room shift the moment someone from outside said what everyone inside already knew β this series is for YOU.
Follow along for the rest of the series. ππΎππΎππΎ
