Lessons in Leadership
From Dr. Pauline Rivers

“It’s About the People!”

I have an unofficial mentor and coach. She is a friend, about 15 years older than me, and retired from a very successful career as a senior level manager.

She is a high energy, over-the-top Extravert, always on the go, and always with something profound to say.

She is full of wisdom and knowledge, and I learn so much from her almost every time we talk. About life, about finances, about family and relationships, and about navigating in the workplace.

Recently she shared some advice that she gave one of her children who was contemplating a high-level promotion in the company that she worked for.

Her advice was to “consider how they treat the people, how they treat their employees, how they treat their customers, and how they treat the public.”

Consider how they treat the people…

Not just the salary. Not just the benefits. Not just the position description and responsibilities. But consider how they treat the people…

Because ultimately, it’s about the people.

“…helping people be great at what they do….”

Lessons in Leadership
“FInd Your Strength and Lead with It, Part I”

I recently had the opportunity, and honor, to speak at a women’s empowerment program at a local technical school.

And even though the program was geared to women, I believe the words of encouragement and empowerment that I felt inspired to share are relevant to all of us on our journey.

There is greatness in each of us. Even if we don’t recognize it or feel it, and even if no one has ever said so to us before. It’s there! We just have to identify it so we can lead with it!

1. There is Greatness on the Inside of You!
2. Lead with your Strength
3. Be the Best You
4. Encourage Yourself
5. Don’t Quit!

Lessons in Leadership

Leadership insights after a day of team building from participants in award-winning emerging leaders program:

-Listen to each other with purpose.

-Listen. Ask questions. Learn from others.

-Be willing to take directions.

-If it’s not working, hit the pause button.

-If it looks like it won’t work, try something else; there’s always a way.

-There is an easy way; don’t over complicate, don’t over think.

-You don’t have to have all of the answers to contribute.

And finally…
We are not alone as leaders….

Lessons in Leadership: How Well are You Living It?

Several months ago I attended an international leadership conference.

For the past 30+ years, I’ve been blessed to be trusted to impart into the lives of people. Personal development, workforce development, leadership development, and faith-based principles.

So, in the spirit of transparency and authenticity, I went into that conference with the mindset that this will be a nice “refresher” for me.

But on the first day, the conference host challenged us. He said, instead of thinking “I’ve heard this already”, ask yourself, “how well am I living it?”

How well am I living it?

That one, well-placed question was a game changer for me, and probably for others at the conference, many of whom, like me, were trainers, consultants, and leadership coaches.

That one question, “how well are you living it”, changed my whole perspective, and ultimately my whole experience at the conference.

So, as we enter a new year and contemplate new resolutions, new goals, and new commitments, let’s ask ourselves, “how well am I living what I learn?”

And if we make new commitments for the year, consider letting one of those be to more fully “live what I learn.”

Lessons in Leadership: Choose Your ”No” Wisely!

I observed a team at work recently. I listened as team members offered suggestion after suggestion, each of which was met with some variation of “no” by the team leader.

And then I watched as one team member literally seem to shrink back in her seat. Very quietly, calmly, and respectfully, she asked, “what do you think we should do?”

Idea after idea turned down.

No upon no, without much of an explanation, until it seemed like the energy and enthusiasm and excitement had been sucked out of the room.

Saying ”no” frequently to ideas and requests, especially without an explanation or discussion, can be demoralizing, discouraging, and trust diminishing.

So, choose your “no” wisely. Say “yes” as often as you can and let your “no” really matter.

Lessons in Leadership
Trust...The Simple Things Matter Most,
Part III

Of all the qualities that are important in a leader, I believe trust is what matters most.

It's the simple, yet intentional things that really matter most in building trust.

It's something so simple, yet intentional, as finding opportunities for employees to work in their strengths. It's allowing them to shine and helping them to succeed.

It's believing in them and believing them.

They are all such simple things: returning a phone call, responding to an email, protecting the monthly one-on-ones, checking in, asking for input, and really listening.

But, when it comes to trust, it's the simple things that matter most.

Trust...The Simple Things Matter Most,
Part II

Of all the qualities that are important in a leader, I believe trust is what matters most.

It's the simple, yet intentional things that really matter most in building trust.

It is working very hard to protect the monthly one-on-ones with employees because it is that time, set aside each month, when the employee is your singular focus. It is "their time" with you.

It's simple things like asking employees how they are doing and really listening and taking mental notes so that you can follow up later.

It's asking for their ideas, using those ideas when feasible and giving the employees the credit.

It's the simple things that matter most in building trust.

Lessons in Leadership
Trust...The Simple Things Matter Most, Part I

Of all the qualities that are important in a leader, I believe trust--building trust, inspiring trust, extending trust, and being trustworthy--is what matters most.

I think everything else that is important in a strong, healthy working relationship, emanates from trust.

Things like returning an employee's phone call.

Or something so simple, yet so important, as responding to an employee's email in a reasonable and realistic timeframe (within 48 hours, perhaps).

It's the simple things that matter most....
