I literally taught this yesterday, so apparently it’s still fresh enough in my brain to annoy me. 😂

Networking 101:

“My name is X and I’m the [insert impressive title here] at [company].”

Okay.

But what do you actually DO?

Your title tells me where you sit on an org chart. It doesn’t tell me why I should remember you, who I should introduce you to, or why the two of us should keep talking after this conversation.

So let’s reverse it.

Pretend you’re not allowed to tell me your title.

Tell me your name.

Tell me what you do.

Tell me who you help.

Tell me what problem you’re ridiculously good at solving.

Tell me what kind of people you want to meet.

Give me something I can CONNECT to.

Because networking isn’t exchanging job titles and collecting LinkedIn connections like Pokémon cards.

It’s figuring out:

Who are you?
What are you great at?
And where could our worlds overlap?

Maybe I need what you do.

Maybe you need what I do.

Maybe neither of us does, but I know the exact person you should meet.

THAT is networking.

And if all I remember tomorrow is that you’re the “VP of Something Something,” we probably missed the opportunity.

So, let’s try it.

Drop your name and what you actually DO in the comments. No job titles allowed.

Sell me on why I should know you.

And while you’re there, read the other comments. You might find someone you should know, too.

08/25/2026

I went hunting for a man at a conference.

Literally. 😂

Someone came to our booth and said, “You NEED to meet this guy. He just spoke about exactly what you guys do.”

Say less.

I Googled him, figured out what he looked like and hunted him down in a conference full of thousands of people.

Mission accomplished.

I introduced myself, explained who we were and what we did.

His response?

“I need you for my business.”

FINALLY. Someone who got it.

We exchanged numbers. He immediately introduced us to someone else he thought we’d be great collaborators with. She came to our booth. Great conversation. Big ideas. Lots of “we need to connect after this.”

I thought: THIS is why you go to conferences.

Then came the plot twist. 😂

“Watch this real quick and let me know when you do.”

It was a sales video.

Turns out, we’d been “exclusively invited” into a paid membership program with a significant monthly investment and 12-month commitment.

Ahhhhh. There it is.

We politely declined but made it clear we still wanted to explore the partnerships we’d been discussing.

And then…

🦗🦗🦗

From BOTH of them.

It’s been a month.

And that’s what bothered me.

Not the sales pitch. I SELL THINGS FOR A LIVING. 😂 Sell away.

What bothered me was realizing what I thought was relationship building may have just been lead nurturing.

There’s a BIG difference.

If I’m interesting when there’s a potential credit card attached to me, but not worth responding to when there isn’t?

That tells me everything I need to know.

Never make someone feel like their value to you is determined by their value as a customer.

Some of my best business relationships have never paid me a dime.

They’ve referred me. Introduced me. Taught me something. Opened doors. Said my name in rooms I wasn’t in.

I’ve done the same for others without expecting anything in return.

THAT is networking.

Your reputation isn’t built by how charming you are while someone is considering buying.

It’s built by how you treat them once you realize they aren’t.

A month ago, I thought we’d found two incredible potential collaborators.

Turns out, maybe we didn’t lose an opportunity.

Maybe we dodged one.

A brief public service announcement about names.

My name is Lorren.

Like Sophia Loren. Or Ralph Lauren.

Yes, I realize those are spelled differently. No, I do not care which mnemonic device gets you to the finish line. Just get there.

Because apparently we need to discuss an interaction I’ve been experiencing MY ENTIRE LIFE, with an impressive amount of frequency lately.

You: “Lauren?”

Me: “It’s Lorren.”

You: “Right. Like Ralph Lauren.”

Me: “Yes. Lorren.”

You: “Well, that’s what I said. Lauren.”

No. That is quite literally why I corrected you.

And somehow THIS BECOMES A DEBATE.

“Well, I’m just saying it the way it’s written phonetically.”

Cool. Still wrong.

“But Ralph Lauren is pronounced…”

Wonderful. Still Lorren.

“But I said Lorren.”

You did not.

THAT IS WHY WE ARE HERE.

Listen, I know my name comes with a pronunciation asterisk. I’ve been managing this situation since approximately kindergarten.

You are absolutely allowed to get it wrong.

I will politely correct you.

What I cannot understand is the decision to then argue with me about how you said my own name or justify why you said it wrong.

There is no appeals process.

We don’t need to review the tape.

I promise I am the leading subject-matter expert on this particular Lorren.

Just say, “Got it.”

Look at that. Conflict resolved. Relationship intact. We all get six minutes of our lives back.

And while we’re here, spelling counts too.

If my name is literally sitting in the signature line of the email you are responding to, please spell it correctly.

Lorren.

It’s right there.

The answer key is attached to every email I send you.

These seem like tiny details because they are.

But tiny details communicate big things.

Did you listen? Did you pay attention? Did you care enough to correct yourself?

Getting my name wrong doesn’t bother me.

Arguing with me after I correct you does.

That’s not a pronunciation issue. That’s basic human respect.

Listen. Correct yourself. Move on.

Anyway, my name is Lorren.

Like Sophia Loren. Like Ralph Lauren.

Or, most reliably, like the woman standing directly in front of you telling you how to pronounce it.

Thanks for coming to my Lorren Talk.

TED was apparently unavailable.

I have room for 3 more businesses.

Not 10. Not "as many as I can get."

Three.

I've quietly managed social media and visibility for businesses since 2011, alongside the other hats I've worn throughout my career.

Most people in my network probably don't even know I do this. Well...now you do.

I'm opening my client roster to 3 additional businesses that are ready to get serious about how they show up online.

I'm looking for businesses that are already doing good work, but their online presence doesn't reflect it.

Maybe you're inconsistent.

Maybe you have 8,000 jobsite photos sitting in someone's phone.

Maybe social media is permanently on the "we really need to do something with that" list.

Maybe you've handed it to an employee who already has an actual job.

Or maybe you're posting, but there's no real strategy behind any of it.

That's where I come in.

I don't just make posts.

I take over the strategy and ongoing management so your business can show up consistently without you having to manage me managing your marketing. Because nobody has time for that.

Depending on the business, that may include Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, content strategy, writing, graphics, executive visibility, community management and professional photography or videography when needed. Every engagement is customized because every business is different. And I'm not trying to fill these three spots with just anyone. The business, goals, expectations and working relationship have to make sense for both of us.

So yes, all 3 spots are currently still open.

If your business needs this, apply here: https://f.mtr.cool/nmidwjztjf

If you know a business owner who immediately came to mind while reading this, send it their way.

I'm looking for three really good businesses. That's it.

Apparently I am VERY accomplished. I know this because my inbox tells me constantly. 😂

I have been “selected.”

“Recognized.”

“Chosen.”

“Named one of the top…”

“Invited exclusively…”

And wouldn’t you know it???

All I have to do to receive this prestigious recognition I had absolutely no idea I was being considered for is…

PAY THEM.

And we’re not always talking $299. Sometimes it’s hundreds. Sometimes it’s THOUSANDS.

My personal favorite is when the email reads like I’ve just won a Nobel Prize and then three paragraphs later:

✨ Here are your package options. ✨

Ma’am.

I did not win an award. I have been presented with a checkout page.

And before somebody comes for me: yes, there are legitimate paid professional communities and contributor programs.

Entrepreneur has a Leadership Network that currently costs $3,000/year and includes opportunities to contribute content. Fast Company has a fee-based Executive Board with publishing opportunities. Those programs tell you what they are.

That’s different.

I’m talking about the random “YOU’VE BEEN SELECTED AS ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN IN BUSINESS” email that magically becomes considerably less prestigious when you discover your credit card is apparently one of the judging criteria.

And this is why we have to stop believing everything we see on social media.

“Featured in…”

“Top 100…”

“Award-winning…”

“Recognized by…”

“Contributor to…”

Maybe.

Or maybe Mastercard recognized you first. 😂

There is absolutely nothing wrong with paying for advertising, PR, memberships, sponsored content or exposure. Hell, that’s marketing.

Just don’t buy the trophy and then tell everybody you won the race.

Those are two VERY different things.

Meanwhile, I’ll be over here waiting for someone to recognize my achievements without asking for my billing address. Although if anyone is giving awards for answering emails while simultaneously reheating the same cup of coffee four times, I expect to be nominated.

And no, I will not be purchasing the commemorative plaque.

Probably.

08/09/2026

Every Sunday I ask myself the same three questions.

What created energy this week?

What drained it?

What do I want to be known for next week?

The first two help me reflect.

The third one helps me lead intentionally.

It's easy to get caught up checking boxes and moving from meeting to meeting.

It's harder, but much more valuable, to step back and ask whether your time is aligned with the leader you're trying to become.

For me, leadership isn't about perfection.

It's about progress.

Small improvements.

Repeated consistently.

Those tend to compound faster than we realize.

As you head into a new week...

What's one thing you want to be known for?

08/08/2026

The best leaders I know aren't the smartest people in the room.

They're the ones who create rooms where other people can think.

That's a very different skill.

Leadership isn't proving you have the answers.

It's creating an environment where people become confident enough to find them.

That shift changes everything.

What's one leadership lesson that changed the way you lead?

08/08/2026

I've stopped asking leaders one question.

"How's business?"

Instead, I ask:

"What are you measuring every week?"

The answer tells me far more.

Businesses rarely improve what they don't intentionally measure.

Visibility creates accountability.

Accountability creates action.

Action creates results.

If you're only reviewing performance when there's a problem...

You're already behind.

What's one metric you never skip reviewing?

08/07/2026

Every business is built on layers.

Here's a simple framework I come back to often:

Leadership

Accountability

Systems

Consistency

Activity

Most organizations try to improve the top while ignoring the foundation.

But leadership doesn't exist without accountability.

Accountability doesn't exist without systems.

Systems don't work without consistency.

And consistency starts with disciplined daily activity.

The strongest businesses aren't built from the top down.

They're built from the ground up.

Which layer do you think organizations struggle with the most?

08/07/2026

I wear a lot of hats.

Sales. Marketing. Business development. Strategy. Growth. Content. Probably a few others I've forgotten because, well, entrepreneurship.

But there's one hat I've kept pretty quiet for a long time:

Social media strategy + management.

I've never really advertised it.

It's been an intentionally small part of what I do, mostly reserved for existing clients, referrals and businesses already in my orbit.

And honestly, I liked it that way.

Because I don't want 30 social media clients.

I don't want to crank out posts for businesses I barely know, check a box and move on to the next content calendar.

That's not how my brain works.

If I'm working with a business, I inevitably start looking at ALL of it.

The positioning.
The offers.
The customer.
The competition.
The sales process.
The website.
The opportunities you're probably sitting on and haven't noticed yet.

Then I look at social media and ask:

What should this actually be doing for the business?

Because posting isn't the strategy.

It's just one piece of it.

For the first time in a long time, I have room to open up 3 additional spots for strategic social media management.

Three. On purpose.

I want to stay close enough to the businesses I work with that I can actually learn the business, think with you, pay attention to what's working and change course when something isn't.

So yes, apparently I'm finally advertising one of the hats.

I even made an application.

Look at me being all official, lol.
