Okay, folks, getting a lot of questions about protecting your pipes during this freeze! 🥶🚰 So here's a breakdown to help my fellow Floridians out. Please share this around! 🙏
🥶🚰 FLORIDA FREEZE PREP: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PIPES (PLEASE READ & SHARE) 🚰🥶
Yeah, I know, Florida and freezes don't seem to go together, but these temps are NO joke! A lot of our homes just aren't built for this kind of cold. Here's the lowdown:
❄️ WHY FLORIDA PIPES FREEZE SO EASILY
Pipes are often in attics, garages, and exterior walls.
Not a lot of insulation around pipes here.
Multiple freezing nights? Big trouble.
❗️BLOCK HOMES ARE NOT IMMUNE! The pipes are still vulnerable.
🚰 SHOULD YOU DRIP FAUCETS?
YES! In most cases. Moving water helps.
✅ Who should drip:
Pipes in exterior walls
Older/mobile homes
Well water peeps
Multiple freezing nights
Temps below 28–30°F for hours
❌ Who might not:
Newer homes with interior plumbing
Briefly touching 32°F
💧 HOW MANY FAUCETS?
Don't go crazy!
✔️ 1–2 total
✔️ HOT & COLD
✔️ Farthest from where water enters
💦 Drip rate:
A STEADY drip or small stream. Not just a plink every few seconds!
🧱 CITY WATER & BLOCK HOMES
Still gotta be careful! Pipes can freeze in those attics and garages! Drip and insulate if it's gonna be below freezing for a while.
🚜 WELL WATER & PUMP SYSTEMS (PAY ATTENTION!)
Higher risk!
Insulate well heads, tanks, and exposed pipes
Safe heat source in pump houses
Drip those indoor faucets
Keep water circulating if you can
⚠️ If the power goes out, pipes can freeze FAST! Insulation is key!
🌱 EXTRA PROTECTION:
Disconnect & cover outdoor spigots
Insulate exposed pipes
Open cabinet doors under sinks
Keep indoor temp above 55°F
Use space heaters safely
🚫 WHAT NOT TO DO:
❌ Don’t leave hoses connected
❌ Don’t drip only hot or cold
❌ Don’t shut off water unless you fully drain pipes
❌ Don’t assume “Florida homes are fine”
🧊 AFTER THE FREEZE:
Slowly return faucets to normal
Check for leaks!
Some bursts don't show up right away!
📝 QUICK TAKEAWAY:
✔️ Drip 1–2 faucets (hot & cold)
✔️ Protect outdoor/exposed pipes
✔️ Well systems = extra care
✔️ Multi-night freezes = high risk
Stay safe and warm out there, friends! A little prep now can save you a LOT of money and hassle later. Share this with your neighbors! 🥶🏡
