The I Choose Life movement was not born from theory.

It was born from my own healing journey.

After surviving ten years of domestic violence, I had to decide whether pain would define me or whether I would choose life.

Choosing life did not mean pretending nothing happened.

It meant allowing God to help me repair my relationship with myself, reclaim my identity, and rebuild my life.

Now, I create the spaces I once needed.

Spaces where survivors are seen.
Stories are honored.
Resources are shared.
Art speaks.
Community gathers.
And hope becomes practical.

That is my why. What's yours?

I sit in such gratitude today.

An idea in my spirit that I said yes to became something mentioned in a conversation.

That conversation became something presented to a team that also said yes.

And now we celebrate the becoming of a program, a cohort of seven special individuals, and outcomes that impact generations.

When you get that internal whisper, say yes. And don't keep it to yourself. You never know where it will go.

The best is yet... becoming.

About last night...

Will you celebrate with me for a minute? My heart is so full.

Yesterday we held our first graduation ceremony of the Celebration of Becoming Program.

This is a program that I developed to improve quality of life and wellness outcomes. This pilot program impacted seven seniors, and those that love them for generations to come.

Over several weeks, we laughed at stories from "back in the day".

We remembered history that impacted a region, a culture and a generation.

We looked at seven individual lives and shed tears over life's tragedies, and more tears over the strength of those who overcame.

We celebrated the triumphs and impact long forgotten, and built intention into seven future identities.

I was so honored to hold space for this cohort and celebrate their becoming.

A picture is worth 1,000 words, so here's a clip from yesterday's celebration. Pictures coming soon.

The best is yet... becoming.

As people of faith, we cannot be so committed to preserving appearances that we fail to protect people.

Prayer is powerful.

And prayer should be used with an expectation to receive instructions that bring safety, accountability, wisdom, resources, and truth.

A woman of faith that's in danger needs more than “just pray about it.” She's already been praying. By the time she gets to you, she needs helping hands and feet.

A child who discloses abuse needs someone who cares more about them than appearances.

A survivor carrying shame needs more than platitudes from the pulpit and whispers in the hallway.

Faith should be a refuge.

Not another room where survivors disappear.

Sometimes a painting can tell the truth before a mouth is ready to speak.

Sometimes a dance can release what a heart has carried for years.

Sometimes a song can reach the place that a lecture cannot touch.

This is why I believe in the power of art.

Art does not just decorate a room.

It reveals.
It confronts.
It comforts.
It gives language to grief, rage, hope, courage, and becoming.

The I Choose Life Community Impact Gala will be an arts-centered awareness event because some stories need more than a microphone.

Some stories need movement. Color. Sound. Sacred space.

Domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, and human trafficking are not “somewhere out there” issues.

They are family issues.
Church issues.
Workplace issues.
School issues.
Community issues.

They touch people we love, people we worship with, people we work beside, and people we admire.

And many of them never say a word.

This is why we need spaces that are honest enough to tell the truth and hopeful enough to point toward healing.

We do not gather to glorify trauma.

We gather to interrupt cycles.

Stories have power that statistics just don't.

Statistics inform the mind.

Stories can move the heart.

When a survivor tells her truth in a safe space, something sacred happens. Shame loses oxygen. Silence loses power. Someone else in the room realizes, “I am not the only one.”

That is why stories matter.

Not for entertainment.
Not for trauma display.
Not for pity.

But because testimony is evidence that survival is not the end.

Some survivors are not curled up in a corner.

Some are leading meetings.
Preaching sermons.
Raising children.
Building businesses.
Building careers.
Serving in ministry.
Showing up for everyone else.

They look “fine” because they learned how to function.

But functioning is not the same as freedom.

This is why I do the work I do.

Not because every survivor is broken.

But because too many powerful women have learned to survive in silence while carrying wounds they were never meant to carry alone.

You are not weak because it hurt.

You are not behind because healing took time.

You are not disqualified because you survived.

Awareness matters.

But awareness alone does not change a life.

A survivor does not only need people to know domestic violence exists.
She needs people who hold space for her without pressure or judgement.

A child does not only need us to be sad about abuse.
They need safe adults who pay attention and speak up.

A trafficking survivor does not only need a statistic shared.
They need pathways to safety, services, dignity, and restoration.

Awareness is the beginning.

But action is the assignment.

That is the heart behind the I Choose Life Community Impact Gala.

More details are coming soon.
