Historic Ybor City is an exotic blend of sights and sounds, with a rich history to explore during the day and a sizzling nightlife to experience after sundown. The vibrant community embraces its past to create a culture that is uniquely Ybor City. Cigar factories from the 1800s have been converted into business lofts, art galleries, restaurants, shops and more. For decades, Spanish, Italian, Cuban

, German and Jewish immigrants made their living by working in the cigar factories that were the main economic source for the city. Their legacy continues in the historic brick buildings and architecture unlike any in Florida. Founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, Ybor City has enjoyed a rich culture for more than a century. Ybor City is one of only two neighborhoods in Florida to be designated a National Historic Landmark District.

Yesterday, Tampa CRA and East Tampa CAC members were excited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for The Vicente, a new 20-unit affordable housing community coming to the Nebraska Avenue corridor.

Led by Urban ReWorx, with support from the CRA; City of Tampa; CDC of Tampa, Inc.; and other partners, this project will transform a former car wash site in the V.M. Ybor neighborhood into 20 new affordable rental homes and approximately 950 square feet of neighborhood-serving retail space. The East Tampa Community Redevelopment Area provided $3.5 million to help make this project a reality.

Once complete, The Vicente will provide a mix of one and two-bedroom rental units for those making up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

CAC members ensure the interests of their neighbors, businesses, and overall community are represented in key redevelopment decisions. Members are expected to attend up to 10 meetings per year in person. If selected, members will serve a two-year term and are limited to two consecutive terms.โ €
