, German and Jewish immigrants made their living by working in the cigar factories that were the main economic source for the city. Their legacy continues in the historic brick buildings and architecture unlike any in Florida. Founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor, Ybor City has enjoyed a rich culture for more than a century. Ybor City is one of only two neighborhoods in Florida to be designated a National Historic Landmark District.

Join Tampa CRA and Tampa Parks and Recreation next Wednesday, June 24 as we officially break ground on the Rey Park and Community Center Renovations. The event will take place at Rey Park (2301 N. Howard Ave.) starting at 10:30 am.

The $3.8 million dollar project will include a full renovation of the park and a new community center, providing the West Tampa community with improved recreational facilities and gathering spaces for residents of all ages! The project also includes an additional $1 million for streetscape improvements in the area surrounding the park and a new public art installation inside the community center.

Tampa CRA’s Housing Team has been busy the last few weeks, actively engaging with our communities and sharing information about the CRA's housing programs and available resources for residents.

CRA Housing staff made a stop in Ybor on May 23 at the Ybor City Saturday Market. Staff spoke with market attendees who were interested in learning more about our housing programs.

On Saturday, June 6, the Tampa CRA Housing team held its first annual Housing Resource Fair & Roadshow at Fair Oaks Recreation Center in East Tampa. The event was filled with housing vendors who provided important information to attendees, presented informational sessions with question-and-answer sessions on Homestead Exemptions, Property Taxes, Heirs Property, Estate Planning, and the CRA Housing programs and initiatives. The highlight of the event was the Housing Roadshow, a bus tour that displayed some of the most recently completed CRA Residential and Commercial/Special Projects. Also, participants in our Down Payment Assistance Program (DPA) who are close to purchasing a home were given an opportunity to see the projects through the CRA that may be completed at the time of their DPA award, along with possible new rental housing units.

Tampa CRA's Commercial Exterior Grant provides commercial property or business owners funds to enhance the appearance of commercial buildings located within one of our Community Redevelopment Areas.

Applicants can receive up to $75,000 with an owner funding match of 50 percent. A legacy credit may be available for some applicants. The property MUST include commercial use and work must be performed by licensed contractors.

Eligible improvements include, but are not limited to:
- Exterior deterioration repairs
-Exterior painting
-Exterior doors and windows
-ADA accessibility improvements

Tampa CRA staff recently toured the Gasworx development. This was a great opportunity for the team to get a first-hand look at the ongoing construction and redevelopment of a large plot of previously blighted and underdeveloped land situated between Central Park, Downtown, and Ybor City.

When completed, the first phase of Gasworx will add 5,000 new residences, including more than 300 attainable units, as well as 500,000 square feet of office space and 150,000 square feet of retail space.

Tampa CRA and the Drew Park Community Advisory Committee (CAC) are holding a special session on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 to discuss the proposed ballpark and redevelopment initiative in the Drew Park Community Redevelopment Area.
