Sitting among living legends—men and women who bravely integrated white-only lunch counters in Tampa during the Civil Rights Movement was an honor.
Hearing their stories while watching the powerful documentary “Triumph: Tampa’s Untold Story in the Civil Rights Movement” at Beulah Baptist Church left me in absolute awe.
Tonight, their story premieres on WEDU (Tampa’s PBS affiliate) at 9 PM ET.
Don’t miss this chance to witness a chapter of history that unfolded here in our own community.
Hats off to Joyce Cotton for coordinating the screening, the entire production team, the funders, and the courageous teens who led the sit-ins. The film—and the panel discussion that followed—were outstanding.
One eye-opening reminder: Tampa’s mayor at the time, along with Governor Thomas Leroy Collins, took a stand that prevented the violent arrests and dog attacks on peaceful protesters that tragically unfolded in other Southern states—decisions that ultimately cost them their reelections.
This is a must-see documentary for every family in the Tampa Bay area and beyond.

Mom was about to turn 80, and it was a joy to be back in Florida planning her milestone bday and celebrating mine with a magician, who liked to play with fire.
I set a “success date” every year—my birthday—to manifest something big. In 2022, I bought a house… this time without a W2. 🙌
But here’s the wow moment I didn’t see coming.
Years earlier, I’d applied for three jobs at my alma mater and got none. I declared, “Next time, they’ll call me because I’m not applying anymore.”
And they did, with an offer to serve as the Chief Communications Officer.
