Starting on December 15, 2021, ASC 842 changed the way private and non-profit companies account for leases. Unlike its predecessor (ASC 840), the new standard requires both operating and finance leases to be carried on the balance sheet as both a Right-of-Use (ROU) Asset and a Lease Liability, a major deviation from how it was initially recorded and reported.

But even though it has been over 4 years since the standard went into effect (5 years for public companies), most private and non-profit companies I encounter are either unaware of the new standard or do not fully grasp how to apply it.
