Acequias and their collaborative management systems are some of our greatest teachers. Join us at the 9th annual New Mexico Working Lands Summit in Talpa June 11 - 12 to hear from producers, community members, and conservationists about cooperative decision-making when it comes to managing waterways, fields, and forests.

Program at a glance:

Thursday, June 11: Hear from leaders in acequia and working lands management at the Talpa Community Center and Library then join us for a happy hour at Taos Mesa Brewing

Friday, June 12: Meet us in Las Trampas for a morning field trip with the Cerro Negro Forest Council to learn how collaborative, acequia management systems are being replicated beyond the ditch and within the forest

This summit is FREE and will include lunch on both days.

A huge thank you to our friends at Taos County Economic Development Corporation (TCEDC), Alianza Agri-Cultura de Taos, Taos Valley Acequia Association, Las Trampas Land Grant, NMSU Taos County Cooperative Extension Service & 4-H Program, and the Cerro Negro Forest Council for helping Quivira put on such an exciting and educational event. See you there!

The acequias from the Rio Chiquito and Rio Grande del Rancho, which supply water to nearly all of Ranchos Valley, were blessed yesterday by Father Ryan from Saint Francis Church on the occasion of Dia de San Ysidro. We extend our gratitude to Father Ryan and all who participated in this meaningful tradition. Plans are to make this blessing an annual event. Tonight, the traditional Vespers, Novena, and Procession will take place at the Capilla de San Ysidro. We ask that everyone pray for rain, which is greatly needed. 💦🌱❤️

Mark your calendars for our May 30th workshop on how to grow food and soil at the same time.

With 35 years of experience growing vegetables in Taos, Melinda Bateman of Morning Star Farm is eager to share her experiences based on practical skills and current soil science practices.

Melinda will focus on what veggies you can easily and successfully grow here in Taos and how to improve your soil at the same time. Melinda will cover what season extension techniques to use, when and how to grow beginner crops, how to tell if you’re watering correctly and share soil improvement information.

1 hour presentation and 30 minutes for Q and A.

After Melinda's workshop, Taos Land Trust will host a volunteer afternoon with Nora at our own Rio Fernando Community Farm where you can get hands-on practice implementing some soil augmentation practices, including the application of Johnson-Su compost extract to garden soils. A lunch will be provided to all those who stick around to volunteer.

Guests are welcome to come just for the workshop, just for the volunteering, or for both. Please bring water, hat and gloves. Additional parking is available at Fred Baca Park.

We’re proud to share that the Taos Valley Acequia Association is a supporting partner of La Acequia, Nuestra Madre, opening May 2, 2026 and running through August 30, 2026 at the Millicent Rogers Museum.

This powerful exhibition lifts up the deep cultural, historical, and ecological importance of our acequias—honoring the parciantes, mayordomos, land based traditions, and water protectors who keep these lifeways alive. Featuring contemporary New Mexican artists whose work reflects both creativity and stewardship, the show brings acequia culture to the forefront at a time when drought, development, and climate pressures make our shared advocacy more important than ever.

Join the museum for the opening reception May 2, 5–7 PM, and a special screening of Acequias: The Legacy Lives On May 30 at TCA.
TVAA is honored to support this exhibition alongside our partners and to continue uplifting the stories, history, and future of the acequias that sustain our communities.

The 2026 Legislative Session began January 20th. We need your support this upcoming session. One way to show your support for acequias is to attend Acequia Day.

La tierra y el agua siempre juntas! Please join us for Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty Day and Acequia Day on February 2, 2026 at the New Mexico Sate Capitol. Land Grants and Acequias are joining forces to host Treaty Day and Acequia Day together! Bring your shovels! We march at 9:30am!

While the modern legal system manages acequias and mercedes as distinct entities; el agua y la tierra no se pueden separar! Please join us for this day of collective advocacy and to ensure that the unified history of the mercedes and the acequias remains visible to our state's lawmakers.
