Another month in the books down at White Sands Missile Range. Our incredible team has been pushing this utility-scale repower project forward in extreme heat (some days have been so hot that we couldn’t glue PVC conduit), which has often meant adjusting the work day to begin before the sun comes up.

As we upgrade the system with 62 kW SMA CORE1 inverters, and set the trackers to be south facing, our crew is navigating over 3,000 linear feet of trenching and working with high-voltage DC, 3-phase 480-volt AC, and 12470-volt medium voltage electricity. Safety has been top of mind and our fingers are crossed for cooler temperatures soon!

Spread the word! We are currently accepting applications for PPC Solar’s annual Photovoltaic Donation Program.

To give back to the communities that support us, each year PPC donates one turnkey solar electric grid-tie system to a non-profit organization in New Mexico, chosen through a rolling application submittal process.

The PPC Team has been at the White Sands Missile Range working on a utility-scale “repower” project.

Repower projects extend the service life of aging utility-scale systems. While solar modules have a 25-30 year warranty (and even longer actual lifespan), other components such as inverters or trackers can eventually break down. At White Sands we are replacing the defunct 625 kW Satcon central inverters with smaller, lighter, and more efficient 62 kW SMA CORE1 inverters. Additionally we’re anchoring the trackers to be south facing, which will reduce tracker maintenance, improve the energy yield, make it more predictable, and lower operating costs.

This project involves a variety of high voltage electrical components. Utilizing electromagnetic detection and AML line locating, our crew is working with over 3,000 linear feet of trenching across many acres with direct-bury wires, making it necessary to hydro-vac at all wire crossings to avoid damaging underground conductors.

Summertime desert projects present unique challenges. Our team has been pushing forward in daytime temperatures consistently over 100 degrees, while accompanied by a plethora of critters like rattlesnakes, scorpions, and black widows. We’ve implemented New Mexico’s new guidelines for working when the heat index is high, and PPC maintains a strong focus on healthy work habits to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration in the field. As a government and
military project there are stringent security and safety requirements, which have enhanced PPC’s employee training and documentation program, including certifications and record keeping to meet OSHA standards.

A look back at the Oh Be Joyful solar project in Crested Butte, Colorado. PPC spearheaded the engineering, procurement and construction of this 1.47 MW DC utility ground mount array. Completed in April of 2026, this solar array will generate 2,609 MWh per year, enough to power approximately 330 homes.

The array location is adjacent to an avalanche zone requiring an avalanche runoff study which resulted in curving boundaries as well as buffer mounds. The high alpine location presented exceptional environmental conditions and a very short building season which required tight timelines and coordination at every step along the way.

The initiative for this project was borne from the town residents’ vision statement highlighting their sustainability goals. To bring that vision to life required unprecedented collaboration between the Town of Crested Butte, Gunnison County, the local electrical co-op Gunnison County Electric Association, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc., Outshine, as well as local entities including the irrigation ditch association and the local mountain bike association (to relocate the Baxter Gulch trailhead).

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this project.

Last week we attended the 3rd annual NM Energy Policy Symposium. With a focus on “moving from policy to real-world deployment across the state” this year’s symposium included great conversations about how to provide energy systems that are “reliable, affordable, and resilient for all New Mexicans.”

Thank you to Vida Mejor Capital and Representatives Tara Lujan and Joseph Sanchez for hosting this event and inviting PPC to participate in conversations surrounding New Mexico’s energy future.
