Five things worth walking before the year runs out:

1. Every exit sign and emergency light — actually lit, not assumed lit
2. Extinguishers tagged, charged, and where they're supposed to be
3. Camera views checked against everything that's changed in the building since spring
4. Nurse call stations in the rooms you turned over this year
5. Inspection records in one place somebody else could find without you

Your fire alarm goes off at 2 a.m. on a Sunday. Is anyone listening?

"Monitored" doesn't always mean central station monitoring. Many buildings have remote station service, which carries lower requirements under NFPA 72.

One quick way to tell: check your contract for runner service. True central station service requires a technician on site within two hours when an alarm signal doesn't restore.

2:40 a.m. A side door gets propped open. Probably just a staff member stepping out, nothing dramatic.

But the camera is aimed a few feet past it. The access control event never triggered an alert. And nobody knows about it until somebody notices the door at the morning walkthrough.

Term of the month: annunciator.

It's the panel first responders read when they come through the door. It doesn't just tell them there's an alarm. It tells them where.

Which is why the labeling on it matters more than people think. A display that reads "Zone 4" instead of "West Hall, 2nd Floor" costs a crew minutes they don't have.

Go read yours this week. If you can't understand it, neither can they.

In a healthcare facility, the camera is the easy part. Where it points is what gets you in trouble.

Cameras belong at entrances, waiting rooms, pharmacies, parking lots, and corridors.

They don't belong in exam rooms, restrooms, or anywhere a screen showing patient records is in frame.

Resident rooms are the gray area in Florida, and audio recording carries the clearest legal risk. If your community doesn't have a written camera policy yet, start there.

Myth: the panel is quiet, so everything's fine.

Fact: quiet can also mean a device got bypassed during a renovation, a zone is disabled, or a trouble signal was silenced weeks ago and nobody circled back.

Quiet and clear aren't the same thing.

If you can't remember the last time somebody actually read your panel, that's your answer.
