The interesting part isn’t really “leave it.” It’s the moment the puppy learns that your interaction is more important than the thing he wants.

Interaction -> communication -> understanding which is more rewarding to a dog than straight obedience. They actually know what’s expected of them rather than fear making a mistake.

THE RECALL WORKED… ON THE FIRST TRY. 👀🐕

But the real lesson isn’t the recall.

This was an insecure puppy experiencing new things in a highly stimulating environment—with his favorite people, kids, movement, distractions and all the excitement that comes with it.

Instead of flooding him with commands or trying to “make” him confident, I focused on calm leadership.

When a dog feels unsure, your job isn’t to match their nervous energy.

It’s to become the calmest thing in their environment.

I let him take in the world. I gave him clear direction. I stayed calm, confident and predictable.

And when it was time to test his recall?

He came. 🐾

That’s the difference between controlling a dog and building a dog who wants to stay connected to you.

Would your dog come back to you in THIS environment? 👇

Because self-control isn’t luck, it’s a skill.

The best-trained dogs aren’t the ones constantly being corrected… they’re giving more and more freedoms when they make good choices but you also have to give them everything they want. Lots of hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, cafes and runs to Home Depot!

Most people think they’re teaching their dog words… but dogs are actually learning patterns, timing, body language, and sound.

I exercised her first. Got her used to a higher pitched dremel sound, then lowered it to half way and only worked a little at a time until I got it this long. She’s not actually being restrained by the leash, I just have it on so she knows I can - she’s an off leash dog otherwise.

Turns out, they weren’t meant for the couch, they were just waiting for the right experience 🐾 💦☀️
