Finally able to do this without guilt, shame or worry.

This image might be one of the most quietly liberating ideas in the whole estrangement journey. Because so many parents of estranged adult children are not willing to lock the door—and honestly, maybe we never should. The hope for reconciliation, the love that never left, the possibility that things could one day be different—those are worth protecting.

But standing in the doorway? Frozen in place, unable to fully live your own life because you're watching and waiting for someone who may not be coming? That is costing you something you can never get back. Time. Joy. Presence. Peace.

Leaving the door unlocked might be an act of love. Stepping away from the doorway is an act of self-respect. You can do both at the same time.

Your adult child knows where you are. They have always known. And in the meantime, there is an entire life behind you that deserves your full attention—people who need you present, moments worth showing up for, and a version of yourself that is so much more than a parent in waiting.
