On Friday, Sept. 11, we will honor the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

A memorial ceremony will be held before the football game at Taylor High School Stadium, located at 231 Wesley Miller Lane, beginning at 7 p.m.

A ticket to the football game is required to attend and can be purchased at taylorducks.org. Taylor Press will also provide a livestream of the ceremony on its page.

Good things are happening at the Greater Taylor Community Foundation. See below for information about their Neighbor Helping Neighbor Program.

The Greater Taylor Community Foundation (GTCF) is now accepting applications for Neighbor Helping Neighbor (NHN), a program that helps older adults and residents facing financial or physical hardship live safely, confidently, and with dignity in the homes and communities they love.

Through trained volunteers, GTCF offers free assistance with yard work and basic outdoor maintenance, home repairs, wheelchair ramp building, trash and debris removal, safety checks and wellness visits, and connections to local resources. The program serves residents of Taylor as well as surrounding communities.

Asking for a helping hand isn't always easy, but reaching out is a sign of strength. NHN was created for exactly that—to fill gaps in service and make sure every neighbor has support when they need it.

The program is event-based. Twice per year, GTCF issues a call for applications and schedules an event that brings a large number of volunteers together to help multiple neighbors at once. The next event is scheduled for November 6 and 7. Applications must be received by September 27 to be included. Applications are accepted year-round, so anyone who applies after a deadline will simply be considered for the next event.

Renters are welcome to apply. While NHN cannot make structural repairs to rental properties, volunteers can help with cleanup inside and outside the home and support renters in requesting repairs from their landlord. Neighbors may also apply on behalf of a friend or loved one; the person receiving help will be asked to confirm details and consent to support.
