👏👏

Congratulations to Shelbi Backhaus on being named NAWIC Member of the Year!

Shelbi's dedication to the construction industry, her commitment to supporting women in the trades, and the countless hours she invests in NAWIC make this recognition well deserved.

Please join us in congratulating Shelbi on this outstanding achievement!

A little about Shelbi:

1) What does being named NAWIC Member of the Year mean to you?
It’s an honor to be recognized by women I admire and respect. NAWIC has been a big part of my growth, both personally and professionally. I give my time because I care about this organization and the women in it, so receiving this recognition makes it even more meaningful.

2) How did you first get started in the construction industry?
My path into construction was a little different! I’m a registered nurse and worked in a men’s state prison for nearly 10 years. My husband, Neil, and I started Backhaus Excavation and Underground in 2016. I helped with the business while continuing to work as a nurse, then moved into the business full-time in 2022. Today, I handle our accounting, HR, and office management.

3) What’s one tool you could never live without?
My phone/digital calendar! Between running a business, coordinating community events, and keeping up with my family, it’s the tool that keeps everything connected. My work may happen mostly behind the scenes, but there’s always something to organize or someone to reach!

4) The best part of my job is ________.
Seeing what we’re building together—as a business, as a team, and as a family. I’m proud of our crew and the work they do, and I love knowing our projects make a lasting difference in our communities.

5) My favorite thing about NAWIC is ________.
The friendships and support. Being surrounded by women who understand the construction industry, share their knowledge, and cheer each other on is something special. Over the years, those connections have become much more than professional relationships—they’ve become friendships.

Our guys have been busting their butts to get these jobs wrapped up, and we couldn’t appreciate them more! I stopped by the jobsite today with a special treat to help them cool off on this hot and windy day!

Not pictured: Dustin — but don’t worry, he wasn’t forgotten! He was already on the move to another job to get things cleaned up, and his smoothie made it to him too! 😂

We’re lucky to have such a hardworking crew. Thanks, guys, for everything you do!

Two weeks ago, Dustin officially hit 2 YEARS with Backhaus Excavation & Underground… and apparently we were too busy digging to post about it. 😂

Dustin, we truly appreciate the hard work, dedication, and perspective you bring to our company. You’re a valued part of our crew, and we’re incredibly thankful for everything you bring to the table each day.

Happy (very belated 😬) 2-Year Anniversary, Dustin! We’re lucky to have you on our team — here’s to many more! Enjoy the red bull and dinner with your family on us!

🎉 10 YEARS! 🎉

Ten years ago, we took a leap of faith and started Backhaus Excavation & Underground with a dream, a lot of determination, and a willingness to work hard. We never imagined where that leap would take us, and today we're incredibly grateful to celebrate 10 years in business.

Over the past decade, we've experienced many milestones, but one of the biggest has been purchasing our own shop. It represents years of hard work, perseverance, and believing in what we were building.

Backhaus has always been more than a business—it's our family. Our children have grown up right alongside this company. Whether they're stopping by the office, riding along to job sites, helping with small tasks, or simply being part of our everyday operations, they've witnessed firsthand what dedication, teamwork, and hard work look like. Even Emma, our *learning to be* shop dog, has become part of the Backhaus crew and keeps everyone smiling!

We've always been a small but mighty team. While we may not be the biggest company, we take pride in the relationships we've built, the quality of our work, and the people who make it all possible.

To every employee who has been part of our journey—thank you. We truly could not have done this without you. Your dedication, work ethic, and commitment have helped shape Backhaus into what it is today. Each of you has played an important role in our story.

One of our core missions has always been to celebrate our employees just as much as we celebrate our accomplishments. We believe our people are our greatest asset, and we want every member of our team to know they are valued, appreciated, and an essential part of our success.

To our customers, contractors, suppliers, family, friends, and everyone who has supported us over the last 10 years—thank you for trusting us and believing in our vision. Your support has meant more than you'll ever know.

Here's to the memories we've made, the lessons we've learned, and the road ahead.

Cheers to 10 years!!

Hard work and community involvement. Thats what we strive for at Backhaus Excavation and Underground!

👋 Continuing our Meet the Board series, we'd like to introduce Shelbi Backhaus, Vice President of the Tea Chamber for Development and Vice President and Owner of Backhaus Excavation and Underground LLC.

Shelbi's path to business ownership is a unique one. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and working as a full-time nurse, she helped launch Backhaus Excavation and Underground LLC alongside her family in 2016. For several years, she balanced a nursing career with the demands of a growing business before making the transition to focus on the company full-time in 2022.

As a Tea business owner and community member, Shelbi values the relationships, networking opportunities, and partnerships that help strengthen our local economy. Through her leadership on the Chamber Board, she is committed to supporting thoughtful growth and helping ensure Tea remains a great place to live, work, and do business.

Thank you, Shelbi, for your leadership and dedication to the Tea community!
