Thank you to and Laci for hosting a fabulous hour with Hoda Kotb on Perspectives in Motion: Unpacking Change, Setbacks, and Opportunity for the Women at Work Summit.
Hoda was authentic and vulnerable and shared her experiences and advice both for the workplace as well as life. I really resonated with what she said (esp losing our dads so young and how it changed everything), I gained new perspectives, and I recommend my network to watch a recording of it. The hour was so captivating and felt like 10 minutes!
A few quotes to share:
*every time there is a decision to make or a crazy change, choose love (love a new job, a new city…)
*always be a ‘student’ and keep learning (HK: “My whole life I’ve been a beginner”)
*when you are comfortable, get uncomfortable
*embrace fear and second chances – push through it, do it anyway (HK: “I was never ready for any job I ever got”)
*”so what?” and “now what?”
*it’s not too late, you’re not too old, it’s right on time – speak it out loud into the universe
*assess where are you spending your time and if there’s anything you want to change
*you can slow it down
*be where your feet are (when at work, be at work; when at home, be at home) – this was the same advice from a C-suite woman leader I heard years ago and have ‘lived’ ever since
*be yourself at work (no one relates to you if you wear a suit of armor; be vulnerable but do not wear your heart on your sleeve every day; it’s a workplace, get your work done, don’t overshare)
*don’t try to be what everyone wants
*get a job that feels like a ‘flow’ (not a constant struggle)
*find your purpose, find a field that gives you that
*most valuable and transferrable skill across career…be a good listener (everyone wants to be seen and heard)
*human connection gets you advancement
*if you are thinking of a change, jump and give it a go (you’ll either be successful or be redirected)
*you have to advocate for yourself, say “here’s what I’ve done”, and “ask for what you deserve”
