I feel very privileged to have been able to attend the Veteran Institute for Procurement - ADVANCE course in Potomac, Maryland this week.

VIP is a program dedicated to,helping veterans build and sustain successful businesses, particularly in the government contractor sector. I was lucky enough to attend VIP Grow in 2011, shortly after taking on the role as President of PM tec, and it gave me the tools and understanding to help grow the company approximately 500% since then. To be given the opportunity to spend the week with this amazing group of veteran entrepreneurs and hear from volunteer advisors on how to strengthen our businesses through topics such as leadership, finance, human relations, business process maturity and mergers/acquisitions has been a gift of immeasurable value.

All of the VIP courses are provided to veterans completely free of charge, including meals and lodging while in Potomac, thanks to the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, U.S. Small Business Administration, and several corporate sponsors.

If you are a veteran starting or growing a business, I strongly recommend looking into VIP.

No plan is perfect.
Half of project management is is developing a reasonable and workable plan. The other half is being able to identify when the project isn't going according to plan, understanding the impact of the variance, and addressing it appropriately.

This is a good list... I'd add another one -- ask for another job. It could be inside your organization or with another, but I think a lot of people don't get promoted because they prefer certainty over challenge.

If you are young and the best at your job, it's probably time to take on a new challenge.

The truth is, you're probably helping many families do these things. As the owner of a small business, I can tell you that nearly every business decision begins with "What would the impact be to our employees?" I believe that most of the other small businesses with which we work have the same perspective.
