Fire extinguishers are talked about frequently because it is a common enough tool that can stop a massive fire before it really gets started. It makes financial sense to train people on the use of a fire extinguisher if it can save your project from burning down. We’ve discussed the PASS method previously, but we wanted to highlight some interesting fire extinguisher limitations that we have run into.

· A dry chemical fire extinguisher such as the common red “ABC” extinguisher will reach a distance between 5 and 20 feet. It is important to be familiar with the models used in your work areas and the effective distance they can be used for.

· A 10lb to 20lb dry chemical fire extinguisher will last anywhere from 10 to 25 seconds. Again, this depends on the model and weight you are using.

· Fire extinguishers are only designed to fight small fires. A rule of thumb a lot of professionals use is the size of the fire should not be any larger than the size of a small trash can.

· Fire extinguishers need to be inspected every 30 days and an inspection log must be kept for these inspections.

Keeping track of these inspections can be a headache, especially since the inspection tags are frequently damaged or ripped off of the extinguisher. With our sister company, One Stop, you can put all of your fire extinguisher inspections online so that they can be referenced whenever you need them.

Erectors and dismantlers for scaffolding are granted certain privileges by OSHA. One of those is that they do not need fall protection when it is not feasible. The idea is that sometimes there is nothing to tie off to overhead and that you cannot tie off to scaffolding unless it is rated for that by the manufacturer. As a result, many contractors opt out of fall protection for erectors and dismantlers without fully considering if fall protection is possible.

Check out this picture and see that there is potentially a way for the worker to have an anchorage point on the roof overhead or with a parapet clamp. I know I’d feel much better with him tied off while working that high off the ground.

The competent person for the scaffolding company would make the call on whether or not fall protection is feasible. This is why it is so important to have properly trained workers/supervision on site. Good competent persons and trained workers will eliminate many safety hazards on their own. Although there is a standardized set of hand signals that clearly and effectively communicate equipment operation, spotters and operators can make their own signals. For example, if the spotter and operator decide that the zombie dance from “Thriller” means boom out, then they may use that (provided the GC and employer don’t have provisions against it).

Admittedly, this is ridiculous. But it still brings up an important point that there are some undefined areas of OSHA’s standards that allow for unforeseen flexibility that can endanger workers. Which is why it is important to standardize work practices across job sites to ensure proper communication. Alliance Safety has a state-wide safety audit group that will help ensure that no matter what job your crews visit, they will all be playing by the same rule book.

A great deal of time is spent on gathering information on hazardous chemicals that we are working with. It is worth the time to get that information, but an overlooked piece of information that will shape how we handle hazardous chemicals and determine which PPE we select is the four routes of exposure.

All too often, companies will try to rely on word of mouth or on the job training to instruct workers on HAZCOM standards. Oftentimes, this will lead to an under prepared workforce that doesn’t know what to do with hazardous chemicals in the event of an emergency. Workplace inspections are one of the most basic components of a functioning safety program. A company can write an exceptional safety handbook and ask their workers to follow it, but without continuous follow up, there is no guarantee of success. People may not fully understand the safety requirements for their work, understand the hazards present in a given situation, or care to follow the safety policies.

Having a competent person who understands the hazards that are present in the work area, from the work itself, and from nearby work activities, will attempt to identify hazards before incidents occur.

Inspections can focus on a variety of topics (fire hazards, housekeeping, electrical hazards, LOTO, falls, etc.) and should be performed regularly throughout the day. Whether you would like to hire Alliance to provide you with qualified safety professionals and workplace inspections, or you would like to keep a record of your own workplace inspections, our sister company can help! One Stop Safety is an online platform that helps you track your inspections with dates, pictures, and locations to organize and store all of your inspections so they are ready whenever you may need them. Check it out today!

Besides injuries and illnesses that occur as a result of work, we also will deal with personal medical emergencies that happen while people are at work. Strokes are the leading cause of serious long-term disability and are the third leading cause of death in the United States (strokecenter.org).

Calling for emergency medical help (911 unless the site has an emergency response team) as soon as possible increases the likelihood of recovery. Knowing the signs of stroke can help with early identification and speed up response times.

You should always have people on site that are current on their first aid training because injuries and illnesses don’t always happen because of unsafe actions. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

For those of you who have walked inspections, you know that this is the stuff of nightmares. If you’re a bit confused, each piece of tape is a marker for damage or incorrect installation. Trade damage does happen on job sites, but much of it can be avoided with proper sequencing and care.

The more out of sequence the work is and the more chaotic the job, the more damage you’ll find. This may just seem like a headache to fix (and it is!), but there are safety issues from trade damage. If the damage happens and goes unreported, we may not realize we need to replace parts of our system until it is buried behind a bunch of other work. That makes accessing the area harder and less safe.

On jobs with a lot of trade damage, it is key to have good record keeping to ensure that you accurately chart all damages and repairs to get compensated for them. Back injuries are a massive source of pain and suffering for our work force and we need to be more proactive in helping our crews avoid it. The best way to think about eliminating back injuries is with the hierarchy of controls. Assess your work area and see if there is any way to eliminate work by using equipment to lift the loads or to break the heavier loads into smaller parts. Can you use engineering controls to install mechanical lifting devices or conveyor belts? Can you use administrative controls to require others to assist people when lifting over a certain weight? Unfortunately, PPE (like back supports/belts) has not been shown to be very effective when it comes to back injuries.

Material handling is an often-overlooked part of the job since picking up and moving materials seems like common sense. Unfortunately, relying on common sense without training may lead to improperly moving, storing, and lifting materials. These unsafe practices will lead to injuries and hazards through mistakes that others may view as common sense. Visit our sister company, One Stop Safety Academy to get trained on material handling and ensure everyone is on the same page.

A frequent joke in some TV shows and movies that revolves around construction is the idea of wet cement. A character might walk through it, get their feet stuck, fall face first into it, etc. Although it is played for laughs on the screen, in real life, the consequences are more serious.

Wet concrete contains calcium hydroxide, which is extremely alkaline (caustic) and can cause skin burns that can continue to get worse without continuous exposure. If it is identified early, workers can remove contaminated clothing, brush off dry chemicals and flush the affected area for at least 20 minutes. Workers also must add vinegar, citrus, or acidic buffer to the water to neutralize the alkalinity.

Concrete burns discolor the skin, changing to a deep purple/blue color. The burns become painful, lead to ulcers, and in worse case scenarios, can lead to amputation. Having a safety data sheet (SDS) on hand for chemical exposure is key to making informed decisions for your crew. Where do we even start with this one? Fall protection, improper equipment usage, improper traffic barricades, the fact that this is probably so commonplace that the operator looks bored out of his mind?

Good equipment operators can help you avoid these sorts of improvised uses because they understand the limitations of their equipment. But good operators aren’t born, they’re trained and then gain experience through repeated safe usage. Even when operators have been working for years, refresher courses are required to ensure that they are not harboring bad habits that could injure somebody.

When safety personnel talk about work habits, it can feel a bit unclear when they ask you to change a habit. Usually, it is confusing because people struggle to break habits throughout their lives and the path to changing our habits isn’t always clear.

Habits aren’t easy to break, and a solution isn’t always readily apparent. But having an experienced safety team looking out for your crew on a job site can go a long way to help change the culture on site and produce safe habits that see a happier, healthier, and more productive job site.
