The Myth: “It is safe to thaw a bag of plasma in the microwave if you are in an emergency and need it immediately.”

The Verdict: ❌ BUSTED.

The Clinical Fact:

Microwaving creates “hot spots” that can cause denaturation of essential proteins and clotting factors, rendering the plasma clinically ineffective.

Extreme heat can cause the plastic medical-grade bag to leach chemicals or even rupture, leading to product loss and contamination.

Rapid, uneven heating increases the risk of a transfusion reaction for the patient.
