All good things come to an end. I am announcing as of today, we are officially announcing the closing of our business. Fowler Sales & Distributing was started by my Father, Wade Fowler Sr. in 1963. My brother and I started working with Dad from an early age. As we both finished High School, we ultimately stayed with the business, after going to TCC for awhile. From that time on, our entire family dedicated our lives to the business. While going thru many phases throughout the years, many good and bad memories were made. We were fortunate to have had many customers that did business with us for many years. Some for over 30 years. Many became life long friends. Dad passed away this past July 5th. After his passing, we knew it was time to throw in the towel. We would like to offer our sincere appreciation to everybody that supported us all these years. We would also like to say thanks to our employees that worked with us. It is with much sadness to make this announcement. Falco/Fowler & Sons has been my life for over forty years. The life experiences learned are ever lasting. Thank you for being part of our family. We will never forget you. God bless.

I get quite a few questions in regards to main drains. What are they designed to do, are they necessary, can they be dangerous, seem to be the most commonly asked questions. Lets address a few of these. Firstly, you must understand their purpose. A main drain is nothing more than another suction port for your pump. Think of it as a skimmer, it’s just placed in the deepest part of the pool. Most pools are or should be valved where you can open or close your M.D. controlling how much suction you desire. You can certainly use an operable M.D. to empty your pool if so desired. Main drains also draw water from the deepest depths of your pool, which can help maintain clarity, particularly in deep pools. We maintain many pools that do not have a functioning M.D. with no issues whatsoever. Assuming your equipment is designed properly and you maintain proper water chemistry, you should not have any issues with not having a M.D. in your pool. Main drains have in the past received negative press due to tragic accidental deaths in pools, most often old or poorly designed pools. Theoretically a poorly designed M.D. can have enough suction to actually hold a small child in place on the drain and even impale them.Due to a tragic event years ago, Federal law requires dual main drains in any new pool to be placed at least 3’ apart, making it impossible for this tragedy to occur. Also many cities require a safety valve suction release on Commercial pools with a single M.D. as an extra precaution.
In hindsight, if I ever build another pool, I will not include a main drain in the design. There are other methods I would choose to serve the M.D. purpose. One design I firmly believe in, if I were building a pool with dual main drains, is have them valved separately. This design ensures a simple fix if one or both drains were to ever develop a line leak. A simple turn of the valve negates the problem. Same goes for skimmers. All suction ports should be valved separate of each other and it’s not expensive to do upon new construction. Hopefully, this will shed some light on this most exciting subject. Pools are extremely easy to operate as long as you have an understanding of the components. Please call us at 903-792-0651 if you ever have a question in regard to your pool.

Pool owners to prevent your pool from turning into a Summer swamp, we would like to offer you a few simple tips. Maintain a good chlorine level in your pool. Yes, salt pool owners that means you too. Often salt generators cannot produce enough chlorine to satisfy in the hot Summer. Many salt pools supplement with adding chlorine tabs to take up the slack. Make sure you are running your pump adequately to maintain crystal clear water. For those who use a timer, you may have to increase run time. The elevated water temps require much more circulation and filtration to keep nice water. Run your fountains at night in cooler temps to lower the water temp. Not only is cooler water nice to swim in, it is also less likely to have an algae bloom, assuming it is properly treated. Lastly, maintain proper water chemistry. All these methods will provide an easy and efficient pool. Have a Happy and Safe July 4th.

Pool filtration? Why such an important part of maintaining a beautiful swimming pool. Very simple. All the debris that is induced in your pool via humans, animals or nature must be removed to maintain clear water. Their are 3 types of filters Sand, D.E. and, Cartridge. Each type has their positive and negative features. Sand filters are the prominent filter. Why? They are the cheapest type filter available. Sand filters, filter down to 50 microns, meaning the particulate size that is removed from the water. Any particulate smaller than 50 microns will pass thru the filter without being captured. D.E. filters are the most efficient, removing the smallest particulate, down to about 6 microns. Cartridge filters are second and remove 10-15 microns of particulate. Every type of filter requires some type of routine maintenance to maintain peak efficiency. Sand filters are routinely backwashed to rid it self of all the collected debris. They also require the filter media (sand) to be replaced routinely. Residential pools typically must change the sand every 2-3 seasons. Heavily used pools more often. D.E. and Cartridge filters must have the grids removed and washed with a pressure washer. Once a D.E. filter has been washed, you then must recharge the grids with the appropriate amount of D.E. powder to coat the newly cleaned grids. If your filter is not working at peak efficiency, no matter how many chemicals you add or anything else you do to your pool, it will be a waste of time and money. Remember the synergy of a well kept pool is Filtration, Circulation and Chemistry. Call Falco at 903-792-0651 for more information. Have a safe and fun Summer.
