There's one sound every appliance tech loves: a compressor kicking back on.

Last week a family in The Woodlands called us because the freezer side of their built-in Sub-Zero was slowly warming up. Ice cream going soft, food at risk, and a refrigerator built right into their custom cabinets.

When we opened the top compartment, the main control board was flickering. Every 3–5 seconds it shut off and powered back up, like a computer stuck rebooting. It never stayed on long enough to run the compressor.

We ordered the correct board and came back Monday. A new Sub-Zero board also has to be programmed for the exact model, so we did that. Then we heard the compressor kick on. Fridge saved, family relieved, and no need to tear out custom cabinetry for a new unit.

So what damages these boards? Usually it's power: surges, nearby lightning strikes, flickering power during storms, and even running a refrigerator on the wrong kind of generator. With storm season in our area, it's worth knowing how to protect your appliances.

A year with a dead microwave, and two companies said it couldn't be fixed.

This homeowner's KitchenAid microwave oven combo had been showing an F6E8 error code for a full year. Two different repair companies told her the part was discontinued. So she gave up on the microwave and used only the oven.

She called us about her trash compactor. While our tech was working on it, he noticed the error code and asked how long it had been there. He knew what F6E8 meant and knew it could be fixed.

We came back with a new appliance manager control board, and the microwave is running again after a year of sitting dead. 🔧

Inconsistent oven temps can be sneaky. A customer in Montgomery, TX had a Viking range that would sometimes hit temperature, sometimes not — and even when it did, it'd drop back down instead of holding steady.

Turned out the sensor was reading fine. The real problem was the control board misreading that signal and cutting the heating element off too early.

Gary and Lester swapped the board, ran it through a full pre-heat and hold cycle, and it's holding steady now. We work for tomorrow, not for today.

Bake, broil, convection bake, true convection, steam — most modern ovens have all five settings, and most people only ever touch one of them.

🔥 Bake: heat from the bottom element (sometimes a little top too), no fan. Best for cakes, cookies, muffins, breads, casseroles, lasagna — anything that needs steady, even heat rather than speed.

🔥 Broil: high heat from the top element only, no fan. Use it for melting cheese on nachos or a gratin, browning the top of a casserole, crisping bacon, or searing a steak.

🌀 Convection Bake: same bake elements, now with a fan pushing the air around. Good for cookies on multiple trays, roasted vegetables, or sheet-pan dinners where you want everything done at the same time without babysitting the racks.

🌀 True Convection: adds a third heating element behind the fan, so heat actually comes from the back of the oven instead of just circulating the bake element's heat. This is the setting for holiday baking — multiple trays of cookies or pies, or roasting a turkey or large cut of meat evenly on every side.

💧 Steam Oven: injects steam into the cook. Best for crusty artisan bread, reheating leftovers without drying them out, proofing dough, and steaming fish or vegetables without a pot on the stove.

If your oven has these settings and "bake" is the only one you've ever pressed, you're not using half of what you paid for.

Front load or top load washer — which one actually fits how you do laundry?

🌀 Front load washers use less water and less energy, and the no-agitator tumble is gentler on clothes. Higher spin speeds mean less time in the dryer too. Tradeoffs: higher upfront cost, longer cycles, and you have to leave the door cracked between loads or you're dealing with a musty gasket down the road.

🔄 Top load washers are usually cheaper to buy, run faster cycles, and you can toss in a forgotten sock mid-wash without stopping anything. They're also mechanically simpler, which tends to mean easier repairs. Tradeoffs: traditional agitator models are harder on clothes and use more water, though the newer high-efficiency top-loaders close that gap.

No bending down to load a top-loader either, if that matters more than the water bill.

Shopping for a new dryer? Gas or electric isn't just a preference — it changes your setup, your bill, and how fast laundry actually gets done.

⛽ Gas dryers dry faster and cost less to run month to month, but they need a gas line, professional installation, and proper venting. If your home doesn't already have a gas hookup, that add-on cost can eat into the savings for years.

⚡ Electric dryers cost less upfront and go in almost anywhere with a 240V outlet — no gas line required. The tradeoff is a higher electric bill over time, and older homes sometimes need a panel check before installing one.

Already set up for gas? It usually pays for itself. Starting from scratch? Electric is the simpler install.

Electric or gas dryer — do you know how differently they actually fail?

Both can leave you with a dryer that tumbles but won't heat, but the parts doing the work inside are nothing alike.

⚡ Electric dryers run on: heating element, high-limit thermostat, control board relay, terminal block, cycling thermostat, thermal fuse.

🔥 Gas dryers run on: igniter, gas valve solenoids, flame sensor, control board, gas burner assembly, thermal fuse.

Same symptom (no heat), completely different repair.
