Like what Trevino had to say about LIV. Three rounds, shotgun starts, and huge money for still breathing after a round will grow old and stale to viewers and attendees very quickly.

ORLANDO OR BUST

Short and sweet this week as I prepare to head to Orlando, FL for the 2014 PGA Merchandise Show.

As always, National Hole in One Association will be a prominent exhibitor, and I always look forward to seeing our booth and old friends at the show.

This will be my 38th year attending (no jokes please), and as always, it will be an incredible experience in seeing what this great game has to offer to golfers from around the world.

Before I progress, I must congratulate Patrick Reed for his wire to wire win at the Humana Challenge in Palm Springs on the PGA Tour. Three consecutive rounds of 63 (first time in PGA history) provided a 7 shot lead going into the final round, and just enough room for a two shot win! Don’t normally pull for anyone in particular, but Patrick hangs his hat just about six miles from where I live here in The Woodlands, TX, so I did have a little bit of home cooking best wishes going on. This is his second win on Tour and he is now among just 3 players at 25 years of age or younger with multiple wins. Keep an eye on him for the balance of the season.

Now, back to the SHOW! It’s like Christmas in January walking into the Orange County Convention Center, as approximately 1,000 exhibitors will be showcasing products related to golf. The normal major vendors will be there, but it’s always exciting to see new and innovative products and services being showcased to the 41,000 PGA professionals and buyers that will attend. Bottom line, if you can imagine it and it somehow remotely relates to golf…it will be there.

The actual display area in the center will tally well over 1,000,000 square feet, and will be viewed by attendees from the USA and over 80 other countries. It is truly a site to see, and just watching the people smile as they move through is entertainment in its own rite. Just for the record, it’s almost four miles of walking if you go to each and every booth!

More next week with what’s new, what’s exciting, and as always, what was the most interesting new product introduced.

Until then,

Hit ‘em Straight,
Mancil Davis

KING’S COMMENTS

The “new” part of the 2014 PGA Tour schedule is underway, with the first two events taking place in Hawaii. I am hoping that the continuing events provide as much excitement and drama as the two we just witnessed.

It’s a new year, and while there is not a lot to report about just yet, my thoughts this week will encompass some comments from the King that get us set for what’s yet to come.

Let’s start with this past week’s event in Hawaii. Jimmy Walker fired a final round of 63, which was good for the win. First and foremost, put this name in your memory bank. While Walker is not a household name just now, he will be. Jimmy Walker has played on the tour for the past seven years. His career PGA event schedule included 187 events before his first win at the Fry’s.Com Open in California to open the new wrap around season. The win this week is his second in just six events, and more importantly point out how fickle this crazy game can be. For the record, Walker is long, strong, putts extremely well, and is now “seasoned.” His confidence in his swing and his appreciation for what is happening in his career bodes well for a continued great year. I truly look for Jimmy Walker to win more events this year, and one of those might just be a major!

Now, just some “news” that you might not be aware of:

Rory McIllroy proposed to tennis star, Caroline Wozniacki this month, with a traditional “on his knees” request for marriage while on board a private yacht in Australia. The still very young super star of golf lived up to the old values and tradition, in that he actually asked permission from Caroline’s father prior to popping the question. She said yes, and this will hopefully propel McIllroy to a much deserved 2014 season. This kid is really great, and I think that the equipment change issue is now behind him. Look for wins, and again, possibly a major.

While on the subject of golfers and their significant others, the blog would not be complete without mention of Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn. Just today, Vonn declared her official residence in the state of Florida, with a primary residence just a few minutes from Tiger’s compound. They also “adopted” a mixed pit bull puppy from the local animal shelter. The puppy, now to be known as Leo, is a perfect fit for Tiger and Lindsey, as the dog was sheltered after being hit by a car and suffering leg and knee injuries. How appropriate, in that “knees” have been a pretty integral part for both Tiger and Lindsey, with the most recent injury causing Lindsey to withdraw from the upcoming Olympics in Russia. Got a hunch that Leo will “rehab” in a great setting.

Still on Tiger: Tiger celebrated his 38th birthday this month. It seems like yesterday that he was the young cat winning USGA amateur events, and then dazzling the PGA Tour with early victories. To put it in perspective, Tiger, in official money winnings only, has won the equivalent of $7,500 per day SINCE THE DAY HE WAS BORN! That does not count endorsement or outside fees. Not a bad gig! If you want even more, Tiger has now earned $1,300,000,000 (yes Billion) including the additional income from outside sources. He is the FIRST ATHELETE IN HISTORY TO make ONE BILLION DOLLARS!

Finally, a big WELCOME BACK to CBS golf analyst Peter Kostis. Peter has been recuperating in Arizona since last May while recovering from colon cancer. A firm diagnosis of being cancer free this past week, following a very difficult series of chemo and radiation treatment, will allow one of golf’s most talented broadcasters to return to the booth at Torrey Pines and the Farmers Insurance Open. We have missed you Peter.

I’m off to Orlando for the International PGA Show for National Hole in One Association next week, and will give you an overview of what’s new and pertinent in our game upon return.

Hit ‘em Straight,
Mancil Davis

As promised...this week's article!

HERE’S JOHNNY!

The first official tournament of 2014 on the PGA Tour concluded on Monday with a dramatic victory by the short hitting (relatively speaking) Zach Johnson. With lots of the round consisting of a “David vs Goliath” match between the precision of Zach Johnson and the swashbuckling let ‘er rip style of Dustin Johnson (no relation), it turned out to be a victory for the slingshot against the sword. Compelling golf at its best, and the chance to see that long is not always the best weapon. Thanks for letting us that don’t hit the ball out of sight know that we still have a place on the course.

The New Year also brought NBC golf analyst, Johnny Miller back to the TV booth and our living rooms. As always, the hall of famer offered his completely honest assessment of the shots the viewers were watching, and as always some of his comments stirred some controversy. Miller has never been one to back away from an assessment of a golf shot or an opinion on just about anything golf related.

The truth is that Johnny Miller may be the consummate TV analyst, in that he creates conversation even after the event is concluded. For the past few years, Miller has been voted as the Best Golf Analyst, and as the Worst Golf Analyst on TV. While you either love him or dislike him...you watch and listen to him. It’s a TV producers dream!

Johnny is off to a fast start this year with his comments regarding how much tougher it was to win multiple golf tournaments during “his” era, as there were so many players capable of winning each week. He cited the likes of Palmer, Watson, Player, Nicklaus, Trevino, Floyd, and maybe the most under rated player ever, Billy Casper as the ones to watch each week. This was most definitely a time when we could look at a leader board and recognize each and every golfer on the list. Every week was a battle, but in my opinion it was a battle between a relatively small number of players. Each and every week on Tour, you could almost pick a winner by naming about 6 or 8 players participating in that event. That said, some of the most incredible “battles” were featured on many occasions with dynamic final rounds to determine championships.

The point of contention with Miller’s assessment is that the quality of play and the number of players capable of winning in this “modern” era contradicts his opinion of what is really happening. There are now more than a handful of favorites to hoist the trophy each week. I will rest my case on this issue with the simple fact that this past week’s Tournament of Champions featured 13 first time winners. That’s more than a handful of winners, and proof that the potential list of winners each week shows the strength and depth of play. These guys have their names on the bag for a reason!

Johnny Miller calls it like he sees it. He is most likely the first TV analyst to refer to a great player’s poor shot as a “choke”. While it might irritate the golfer referred to, the rest of us truly respect the call, and can relate. Prior to Miller being on board, each shot was made out to be the most difficult ever hit, and poor shots were just cast off as bad breaks. Great shots deserve praise and poor shots deserve honesty.

Johnny, I’m in your corner (most of the time) and if you ever need an Ed McMahan…I’m available.

Hit ‘em Straight,
Mancil Davis
