🏡 Home Safety Tip: Prevent Falls Before They Happen!

Falls are one of the leading causes of serious injuries at home, but a few simple steps can make a big difference:

✅ Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs if you have young children.
✅ Keep stairs clear of shoes, toys, and clutter.
✅ Make sure handrails are secure on stairs.
✅ Use non-slip strips in tubs and showers.
✅ Place non-skid bath mats outside tubs and showers.
✅ Add nightlights to hallways and bathrooms for better visibility at night.
✅ Install window guards and open windows from the top if young children are in the home.
✅ Secure rugs with tape or remove them altogether to prevent tripping hazards.

A safer home starts with small changes that help protect the people you love most. ❤️

Fire spreads quickly, but a closed door can create a critical barrier against heat, smoke, and toxic gases. That simple action may provide the extra minutes needed to escape safely or await rescue. Before you turn in tonight, make “close before you doze” part of your routine.

⛈️ THUNDERSTORM SAFETY REMINDER ⛈️

When severe weather moves into our area, remember these simple but life-saving rules:

⚡ “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move immediately into a substantial building or a fully enclosed vehicle with a metal roof. Pavilions, sheds, tents, carports, and covered porches do not provide adequate protection.

🌊 “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Never drive through flooded roadways. Water may be deeper than it appears, and the roadway beneath may be damaged or completely washed away. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away most vehicles. No destination is worth risking your life.

📱 Pay attention to alerts and warnings.
Keep multiple ways to receive weather information, including weather apps, local news, NOAA Weather Radio, and emergency alerts on your phone. Conditions can change rapidly, especially during severe thunderstorms.

🔌 Avoid using electronics connected to wall outlets.
Lightning can travel through electrical systems and cause injury. Unplug sensitive electronics when possible and avoid using corded devices during a storm.

🚿 Avoid running water.
Lightning can travel through plumbing systems. Avoid showers, baths, washing dishes, or other activities involving running water until the storm has passed.

🌳 Stay away from windows and large trees.
High winds can break limbs, uproot trees, and send debris flying. Remain in an interior room whenever possible.

🚨 Remember: Most thunderstorm-related injuries and fatalities occur because people underestimate the danger. Taking a few simple precautions can make all the difference.

Stay weather aware, stay informed, and stay safe

National Heat Awareness Day serves as an important reminder that heatstroke can happen faster than we think — especially for children.

🌡️ NEVER leave a child inside a vehicle.
🌡️ ALWAYS look before you lock.

A parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, even with the windows cracked. Take a moment to check the back seat every time. One quick look can save a life. ❤️

Earlier today, TDFR crews responded to a very unusual rescue after a 5-week-old stray kitten somehow managed to get stuck behind the plumbing of a toilet. After some careful maneuvering, patience, and a little teamwork, crews were able to safely free the tiny feline from its tight spot.

We’re happy to report the kitten is doing just fine and headed to the vet tomorrow for a full check up — but is probably down to at least six of its nine lives now. 😅

‼️ Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1–4.
Here’s what every parent and caregiver needs to know ⬇️
✅Start swim lessons early. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children start swimming lessons at 1 year of age. Find a swim instructor who teaches toddlers & preschoolers to swim while wearing clothes.
✅Always have a Water Watcher. Designate a water watcher when you are in, on, or around water. Watch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Young children or inexperienced swimmers need to be within arm’s reach of an adult at all times. More info on Water Watchers: https://ndpa.org/designateawaterwatcher/
Key points to remember:
⚠Drowning is silent and can happen in as little as 20 seconds
⚠Almost 70% of childhood drownings happen during non-swim times
⚠88% of child drownings occur with a parent present
🚨Prepare for an emergency by learning CPR training and basic water rescue skills. These can make the difference between life and death. Always have a phone available to call 911.
