⛈️ THUNDERSTORM SAFETY REMINDER ⛈️
When severe weather moves into our area, remember these simple but life-saving rules:
⚡ “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move immediately into a substantial building or a fully enclosed vehicle with a metal roof. Pavilions, sheds, tents, carports, and covered porches do not provide adequate protection.
🌊 “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Never drive through flooded roadways. Water may be deeper than it appears, and the roadway beneath may be damaged or completely washed away. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 12 inches can carry away most vehicles. No destination is worth risking your life.
📱 Pay attention to alerts and warnings.
Keep multiple ways to receive weather information, including weather apps, local news, NOAA Weather Radio, and emergency alerts on your phone. Conditions can change rapidly, especially during severe thunderstorms.
🔌 Avoid using electronics connected to wall outlets.
Lightning can travel through electrical systems and cause injury. Unplug sensitive electronics when possible and avoid using corded devices during a storm.
🚿 Avoid running water.
Lightning can travel through plumbing systems. Avoid showers, baths, washing dishes, or other activities involving running water until the storm has passed.
🌳 Stay away from windows and large trees.
High winds can break limbs, uproot trees, and send debris flying. Remain in an interior room whenever possible.
🚨 Remember: Most thunderstorm-related injuries and fatalities occur because people underestimate the danger. Taking a few simple precautions can make all the difference.
Stay weather aware, stay informed, and stay safe
