On July 13, 1918, inventor Francis Edgar Stanley died. He and his twin brother Freelan Oscar Stanley (born in Kingfield), co-owned the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, which built the famed Stanley Steamer. The Stanleys also invented the revolutionary dry plate photography technology and sold that part of their business to Eastman Kodak in 1904. Adding to the family's vast talents was noted photographer Chansonetta Stanley Emmons, sister to the twins.
