๐๐ COMMUNITY INFORMATION: Understanding ALS Upgrades
The Thomson Fire Protection District would like to take a moment to educate our community about why you may occasionally see Clinton Fire Department responding alongside Thomson Ambulance on emergency medical calls.
First and foremost, this does NOT mean Thomson Ambulance missed a call, failed to respond, or was unable to staff an ambulance.
This is called an ALS Upgrade (Advanced Life Support).
๐ What is an ALS Upgrade?
Thomson Ambulance operates at the Basic Life Support (BLS) level, staffed by licensed EMTs who are trained to provide emergency medical care.
However, certain medical emergencies require a higher level of care than a BLS ambulance is licensed to provide. In these situations, an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance staffed with paramedics may be requested to assist.
Paramedics have additional training and are authorized to provide advanced medical treatments, administer certain medications, and perform procedures that are outside the scope of an EMT.
๐ Why does Clinton Fire Department respond?
Thomson Fire Protection District has written agreements with our surrounding ALS ambulance services to provide advanced medical assistance when needed. Clinton Fire Department is one of those agencies.
These agreements are in place to ensure our patients receive the highest appropriate level of care during a medical emergency.
Requesting an ALS upgrade is not a staffing issue. It is a patient care decision.
Our EMTs are fully capable of providing the care within their scope of practice. Recognizing when a patient requires additional medical interventions and requesting a paramedic is part of providing responsible, professional emergency medical care.
โค๏ธ Our Patients Come First!
When you see two ambulances responding to the same emergency, please understand that it does not automatically mean something went wrong or that Thomson Ambulance was unable to respond.
It means emergency medical professionals are working together to provide the best possible care for someone in need.
We are grateful for our working relationships with Clinton Fire Department and all of our surrounding ALS agencies. Their willingness to assist our crews helps ensure our community has access to advanced emergency medical care when it matters most.
At the end of the day, it is not about whose name is on the ambulance. It is about doing what is best for the patient.
