Advotocracy

Advotocracy PR and communications strategies that will improve image and reputation, build brands, engage stakeholders, and change conversations.

Advotocracy is more than an interesting word. And it’s more than the independent public relations practice I started after many years at General Motors. It is a concept – and a process -- I use to describe the act of leading through advocacy. During my PR life, I’ve learned that most difficult situations involving outside detractors are best solved by being transparent and trying to understand you

r critic’s point of view. By finding common ground with your detractors, even the most determined ones, you can actually turn them into your partners and, eventually, your most vocal advocates. That’s what Advotocracy is all about. Advotocracy builds communications and thought leadership strategies to grow personal and corporate brands, improve reputation, and support key business-development activities. It starts the kinds of conversations you need to succeed, and changes conversations that are making it harder for you to win. Simply put: Advotocracy creates fans, turning haters into huggers.

Given that Coachella is underway, let's revisit this post about brands and music strategies. Most of the key takeaways remain relevant today. For example: 1) be authentic and don’t pander to your audience, and 2) partner with the right people and be empowered to do your own thing. Be sure to download FRUKT's festival report and read the related post by friend & colleague Erik Deutsch: "Sounding Off on Brands and Bands: How to Electrify Festivalgoers." And have fun in the Sahara tent (remember to stay hydrated)!

How does journalism survive in a post-truth world? Smart news operations find "new ways to listen and respond to their audiences—rather than just telling people what to think."

The news is in crisis, but smart media orgs are battling to ensure journalism has a future.

Interesting insight about what brands can learn from this election, especially those looking to build an Advotocracy. "Brands that earn respect from their consumers by engagement usually survive." Otherwise, they will likely drive people to the competition. Smugness never turns detractors into advocates, nor haters into huggers.

Brands beware: Consumers hate smugness.
