September is Mold Awareness Month.

Here's the part most homeowners don't know: mold can start growing within 24 to 48 hours of water damage. Not weeks. Days. That's why a small leak matters. A slow supply line drip, a failed toilet seal, water under the dishwasher — if it stays wet, it becomes a mold problem before you ever see a spot on the wall.

If you've had water damage and you're not sure it dried properly, call or visit cougarrestoration.com to restore your property now!

Pacific Northwest rain doesn’t ease in — it arrives. Take some time now and get ahead of it:
- Clean your gutters and downspouts. Clogged gutters overflow against your siding and foundation. Downspouts should discharge 4–6 feet from the house.
- Inspect your roof. Look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles and check flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights.
- Check the grade around your foundation. Soil should slope away from the house.
- Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and exterior penetrations.
- Trim back branches that drop debris into gutters or could come down in a windstorm.
- Look in the crawlspace. Standing water or damp insulation now will be much worse in November.

Prepare in August, or deal with it in December.

When was the last time you actually pressed the button?

Working smoke alarms cut your risk of dying in a home fire roughly in half — but only if they’re maintained.

- Test every alarm monthly
- Replace batteries at least once a year
- Replace the entire unit every 10 years (check the date printed on the back)
- Install one inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including the basement
- Interconnect them if you can — when one sounds, they all sound

Takes five minutes. Worth every second.

Scrubbing mold with bleach isn’t fixing it.

Here’s why mold is one job you shouldn’t tackle yourself:
- Bleach doesn’t kill mold on porous surfaces. It lightens the color while the roots stay alive in the drywall and wood underneath.
- Disturbing mold spreads it. Cutting or scrubbing without containment can send spores throughout your whole house via the HVAC system.
- You’re treating the symptom. Mold is a moisture problem. Until the source is found and fixed, it comes right back.
- What you see isn’t all there is. Surface growth usually means more behind the wall.

Professional remediation means containment, negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, proper removal, and moisture correction — so it’s actually gone.

The floor looks fine. Underneath is a different story.

Some of the worst water damage we find is completely hidden — a slow supply line drip behind a wall, a failed toilet seal, a roof leak that travels down a rafter before it ever shows on a ceiling. By the time it’s visible, it’s been happening for weeks or months.

Hidden warning signs to watch for:
- A water bill that jumped without explanation
- Floors that feel soft, spongy, or slightly uneven
- Baseboards or trim swelling or separating from the wall
- A musty smell that comes and goes
- Condensation on windows or rooms that feel unusually humid
- Discoloration that keeps coming back after you paint over it

Moisture meters and thermal imaging find what your eyes can’t. If something feels off, get it checked — mold can begin within 24–48 hours, and structural rot follows.

Water damage rarely announces itself. It leaves clues.
1. Water stains — yellow or brown rings on ceilings and walls mean water is getting in somewhere above.
2. Warped or buckling flooring — cupping hardwood, lifting laminate, or soft spots underfoot.
3. Musty odors — if a room smells damp, there’s moisture you can’t see.
4. Peeling or bubbling paint — moisture pushing through from behind the surface.

Any one of these means water has been sitting long enough to cause damage, and mold can start growing within 24–48 hours.

Grill fires peak in the summer months — and most of them are preventable.

Before your next cookout:
- Give it space. Keep the grill at least 10 feet from siding, railings, and anything overhead. Never grill in a garage or under an awning.
- Clean the grease. Built-up grease in the trays and burners is the #1 cause of grill fires.
- Check for leaks. Brush soapy water on the propane hose and connections, then turn on the gas. Bubbles mean a leak.
- Open the lid before you light. Gas builds up under a closed lid and ignites all at once.
- Never leave it unattended. Kids and pets stay 3 feet back.
- Dispose of coals correctly. Charcoal stays hot for 24+ hours. Soak it or seal it in a metal container.
