You're invited to join us for our upcoming “From Messy to Migratable: Streamlining Collections Data with Excel” webinar, which will be held on Thursday, April 9 Pacific. Register today, as seats are limited: https://www.relicura.com/webinar-registration-page

Here is what we'll be covering: Bad data formatting is the #1 hurdle to a successful Collections Management System (CMS) migration. While every CMS is different in how it likes the data to import, the one foundational principle we can rely on is that the data needs to be consistently formatted. In this fifth installment of our cleanup series, we get hands-on with the Excel tools that turn messy formatting into import-ready data. In this series we approach Excel from a collections-first perspective. We aren't spreadsheet scientists—we’re registrars and archivists sharing the exact, repeatable workflows we use to get data migration-ready without needing to be an Excel expert.

New to the series? Catch up on our previous sessions on planning and foundational cleanup via Relicura’s Collection Data Cleanup playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FECufQP2yo&list=PLRbHqbP8MyF1mND9a09CYWIDRLm7F5pur

Collections management requires focus and uninterrupted time to accomplish the size and complexity of our work. In busy museum environments, that’s often easier said than done. With the sheer volume of work on every museum staff member’s list, approaching things with efficiency in mind is critically important.

Last week, we explored how to create time for effective collections management work, as we must first make time available before we can protect it.

Now that we have strategies for clearing time on our calendar, this week we will build on that concept by covering how to protect the time we’ve intentionally dedicated to collections management work. Learn more via Lucidea:

In our May newsletter, we looked at what happens when local museums and libraries in the United States lose public funding—how collections disappear, and how community action can keep that history alive.

This month, we’re turning our focus to Canada, where current cases show what happens when cultural heritage is treated as a commodity, not a responsibility.

Collections management is comprised of a myriad of activities and tasks necessary to the care and stewardship of objects in the collection. The work often requires dedicated focus to complete an activity successfully, and yet there never seems to be enough time in the day. Hectic schedules make it difficult to carve out time to approach the work, and even harder to find enough time for real focus.

In this series, we will share strategies for effective collections management work with an emphasis on carving out time—and how to make the most of it.

Today’s post via Lucidea will explore how to create time for collections management work. Upcoming posts will cover how to batch collections management work and how to prepare for focused time to maximize impact. Learn more:

Fifth-grader Ameya Desai took the prize in the middle school category of the annual NPR Student Podcast Challenge with Far From Home - Shikata Ga Nai, which centers around an interview with Linda Horikawa, a 85-year-old Japanese American incarceration camp survivor. In the episode, Ameya aims to uncover the history that took place in her local community. Ameya’s podcast was selected out of over 2,000 entries. She was also among the winners selected in the fourth grade category of last year’s edition of the contest with Far From Home - Sugarcanes On My Mind, in which she interviews her grandfather about his family's forced migration from India to Uganda to the United States. Thank you to National Council on Public History - NCPH for sharing this resource.

For the first time, NPR's Student Podcast Challenge has a returning champion: a California fifth grader who explored a dark chapter in U.S. history during World War II.

Building a resilient digital collection requires knowledge, tools, and processes to be successful. Due to the complex nature of digital file preservation and the multiple mechanisms needed, consistent success depends on having a plan.

Previously, we shared foundational questions to ask about digital preservation at your museum and recommended a shift from simply preserving digital files to building digital resiliency.

We then covered the technical and logistical challenges museums face with digital collections and specific elements involved in building resilient digital collections. Our latest Lucidea post concludes our exploration of building digital resiliency with the final two elements: protect and plan.
