Imagine a manager telling an employee, “I’m happy to hear your ideas,” while checking their phone throughout the conversation. The words communicate openness. The behavior communicates something else entirely.

Employees notice these inconsistencies. A leader can say that feedback is welcome, but crossed arms, limited eye contact, visible frustration, or constantly looking toward the door may make someone think twice before speaking honestly.

The goal is not to analyze every movement or manufacture the “perfect” posture. It is to become aware of whether your nonverbal communication supports the message you are trying to send.

We've brought together 10 skills that help people work better together, navigate challenges, and grow in their careers. Some might come naturally to you. Others may take a little more practice. That's what makes professional development so valuable.

Body language needs context.

A posture or gesture that feels perfectly natural with friends may communicate something very different in a job interview or meeting. Culture matters, too: eye contact, head movements, and other nonverbal cues don’t carry the same meaning everywhere. That’s a useful reminder for anyone working with people: stay curious before assuming you know what someone’s body language means.

It’s also important to be in control of your body language. Your body speaks before you do. Make sure it says what you want it to say:

To project confidence or authority, keep your posture open.
To show empathy, make someone feel seen by doing similar gestures.
To be more inclusive, direct your feet towards the person you're talking to.
To de-escalate conflict, keep your palms open.
And to show you're actively listening, tilt your head.

A healthy team needs room for people to be learners.

Room to ask the question they think everyone else already understands. Room to try something and get it wrong. Room to offer an idea that isn’t fully formed yet. Room to respectfully question the way something has always been done.

That’s part of psychological safety.

When people know they can participate without fear of embarrassment, marginalization, or punishment, they have more freedom to contribute what they know and keep learning what they don’t.

Professional development can be valuable at any point in your career.

There will always be another conversation to navigate, relationship to strengthen, challenge to work through, or skill worth practicing.

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you invest in yourself. Curiosity and a willingness to grow are a great place to begin.

Most organizations would probably say employee engagement is important.

Here’s a better question: Could your employees tell that it is?

Only 31% of front-line managers and employees in Dale Carnegie research reported seeing evidence that their organizations actually prioritize engagement.

People notice what gets discussed regularly. They notice where resources go, what leaders ask about, what gets measured, and what managers are given time to focus on.

Take a look at your organization from an employee’s perspective. What signals are you sending about the importance of engagement?

Growth rarely happens all at once. More often, it happens quietly through the choices we continue making.

Choosing to learn. Choosing to try again. Choosing to speak up. Choosing to listen. Choosing to step into an opportunity that asks a little more of us.

Over time, those choices become part of who we are.

What choice is helping you grow right now?

The way you lead may change depending on the people, situation, and challenges in front of you.

Still, most of us have certain tendencies we return to. Understanding those patterns can give you useful insight into how you motivate people, make decisions, communicate, and create an environment for others to contribute.

Take a look through these four leadership styles and spend a minute reflecting on your own.

Where do you see yourself?

Appreciation carries more meaning when it comes from genuine attention.

Notice the person who quietly keeps things moving. The teammate who asks thoughtful questions. The manager who makes time to listen. The coworker who follows through.

Then put what you noticed into words.
