Our goal was to bring beauty and utility to this side of the client's driveway. A smooth flagstone path provides access to bring bins to and from the street without having to wrestle past cars, and the installation of a continuous rock wall to keep the drive and sidewalk tidy! Boulders placed in the edge and highlighted in the side yard bring texture and variety ahead of some planting we'll do this fall to re-introduce some hearty native plants!

Stay tuned for planting progress this fall.

This custom fence and double-gate project was created with powder-coated steel and clear cedar boards in two styles: spaced horizontal slats for a 4' tall 30' long driveway barrier and a 6' tall angled slat gate inspired by what you might see at the Japanese garden. The handle-operated latch is kind to aging fingers and the cane bolt allows for the double-gate to open for 5 feet of clearance.

Nice work Cole and Avery Coulombe!

Another one for our Kill Your Lawn series.
This long parking strip was transformed from a stretch of turf into a series of planted beds, with paver paths providing easy access between the sidewalk and street.
Boulders add structure, while a mix of shrubs, grasses, perennials, and groundcovers will continue to fill in and soften the space over time.
Designed by Karen Farmer and installed by Winterbloom.
A much more interesting—and useful—way to use the space than lawn.

Thanks Ashley Ballard and Andy for a job well done!

Out with the lawn and in with a new decomposed granite patio.
This underused patch of grass is now a generous, permeable gathering space centered around the existing flowering dogwood. The new patio creates plenty of room for seating while keeping the garden beds and raised planters connected to the space.
A much more functional garden space—and the tree still gets to be the star. DG was chosen to complemt the house color.

Installed by Ashley Ballard and Andy.

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted photos from Thornhurst Garden. The garden is in full roar right now.
The poppies are catching the light just right, the alliums are hovering above everything like little purple planets, and there’s color spilling through nearly every bed. Everywhere you look, something new is opening, reseeding itself, or leaning into its neighbor, and it's stunning!

Gardening this time of year is a pleasure.
New fronds unfurling, native annuals starting to bloom, Epimedium catching the light.
Things slow down in the garden, as we stop and pay attention, and life speeds up.

Passing the torch paid off.

Forrest handed off the brick paving to Avery and Cole—herringbone field with a clean soldier course, set on a properly prepared base for long-term stability and drainage.
Our lovely client stopped by today to let us know she had an open house and many visitors noticed and complimented the new patio and path.

Nice work and Cole!

This patio needed a reset.

We started with full demolition and removal, then regraded the subsoil and rebuilt the base. Pavers were set and finished with polysand, with a french drain installed along the edge to handle drainage and protect the space long term.
Led by Ashley, with the crew bringing it across the finish line.

Thanks, and Andrew!

A short dry stack retaining wall in a tricky location where paths merge and safety is a top priority. The homeowner had some nice peices of obsidian that were incorporated when the wall was constructed, nice touch!
