In Stitches Quilter

In Stitches Quilter Award Winning Quilter who has retired from making memory quilts and is exploring all things quilty I’m Barb, the owner of In Stitches Memory Quilts.

Making memory quilts and pillows is my passion. It is an honor to be trusted by my clients with their precious items to be included in their memory quilts. I do my best to incorporate their individual requests whenever possible. I love that my work allows me an opportunity to share a part of other people’s lives. It is truly a blessing to have the opportunity to create special lasting memories doi

ng something that I love to do. I am married and have three grown, married children. My mother was a quilter when she retired from teaching. I truly love quilts! When my father passed away many years ago, I decided to try quilting as a way to work through my grief. It was very therapeutic for me. I love that quilts are heirlooms that we can pass on for generations to tell our story. T-shirt quilts are especially filled with our memories and experiences. I had planned to make my first T-shirt quilt while my husband was deployed to Afghanistan with the USAF. I fount that I wasn’t up to the challenge of learning a new technique while he was deployed. As a result, that first quilt wasn’t started until the month after he returned home safely. I made it for my oldest son using his collection of shirts. He has continued to be a wonderful support for my business. He has been especially helpful with his computer tech savvy. I really enjoyed making his quilt. It turned out so well, that my friend asked me to make one for her husband and told me I should do this as a business! And an idea was born! You may be wondering how I came up with my business name: In Stitches Memory Quilts. My second son is a graphic designer. He came up with my business name and designed my logo. He said the branding for a business should represent the owner, me. I am well known by my family and friends for my laughter. It comes easily, often, and sometimes loud. I have been told by others that when they hear me laugh, even if they are in another room and don’t know what I’m laughing at, they laugh along! And so, “In Stitches” is very fitting. My youngest daughter also contributed to the beginning of In Stitches Memory Quilts. She proudly shows off the quilt I made for her to all her friends. I have had the honor of making quilts for her friends and friends of friends. That is “word of mouth” marketing at work!

As a Christian who believes that the most important biblical teaching regarding relationships is to love thy neighbor, I am horrified by the lawless, violent, and inhumane actions of ICE. To justify these reprehensible measures, ICE attempts to normalize their life threatening actions, disregard of constitutional rights and freedoms, and dehumanizing of anyone classified as other. All people in the USA including citizens, legal and illegal immigrants are suffering. This has been illustrated by using a yarn barbed wire fence of armed ICE agents containing people behind their wall of oppression. A barbed wire X is over people to represent the record number who have lost their lives to the violence and negligence of ICE.

As the mother of a q***r son and fierce ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, I know our trans kids deserve to be respected, protected, and encouraged to thrive as their true authentic selves in our education systems across our country. The devastating truth is trans kids in schools are being aggressively segregated and dehumanized by parents, school systems, and government agencies. In 2025, 24 states passed anti-trans youth legislation. This tragic truth is represented by a school playground in which two trans kids on top are made from the colors of the trans pride flag while the cis gender kids are made from traditional pink and blue. There are only two trans kids to represent the small percentage of kids that identify as trans. The partial lyric from the song “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd is presented using kids’ magnetic letters to call attention to the dichotomy of the childish letters with the strong message they contain. The black crayon fence with the yarn barbed wire highlights the hostile and violent actions of adults in their war against trans kids in our schools masquerading as concern.

Just finished Fanciful Butterfly.

This imaginary butterfly image was created with a combination of my creativity and AI. The technique I used for the butterfly is called thread painting. The image of the butterfly is created using thread with various methods of movement of the machine. I chose to mount the final piece on a stretched canvas for presentation. 12”x12”
My lovely husband mounted it to the canvas for me❤️
