Today's MesoSafety preparedness tip focuses on creating a medical disaster plan for those reliant on CPAPS and oxygen-breathing devices. Below we have written 5 tips on how to create an effective plan!

First and foremost, those who rely on medical devices should consider building a simple, but yet effective relocation plan. Identify where you will relocate until a disaster is over. This could include going to a family or friend's home who has access to power and other medical needs. Try to have at least 3 relocation sites, two that are close to your home and one that is out of county if possible.

Second, Individuals who have home health care should coordinate with their provider before an event to ensure they have oxygen bottles or battery power devices readily available.

Third, before any planned event, talk to your DME provider about getting extra oxygen bottles to ensure you have enough supply during the event. For those on home health, be sure to include your in-home providers in your planning.

Fourth, having battery backups specifically designed for CPAP machines is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted therapy during power outages. These backups provide a reliable power source, allowing individuals to continue their CPAP treatment without disruption, safeguarding their health and well-being. Additionally, your healthcare provider may have alternative solutions as well.

Fifth, consider purchasing a generator if able. Investing in a generator is vital for CPAP and oxygen concentrator users during disasters, ensuring uninterrupted power for critical medical needs.

It's Preparedness Wednesday! Today, we are highlighting ways that you can winterize your home.

Assembling an Emergency Preparedness Kit is crucial for winter safety. Include essentials like electric space heaters, blankets, matches, a first aid kit, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, a non-electric can opener, a shovel, and salt. Maintain a three-day supply of non-perishable food and one gallon of water per person. Never use gas stoves, charcoal/gas grills, or generators indoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Opt for safe heating alternatives like wood stoves, fireplaces, space heaters, or kerosene heaters. Refuel kerosene heaters outdoors, keeping them 3 feet from flammables, and ensure proper ventilation. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, testing them regularly. Before winter, have professionals inspect your chimney, furnace, and heating utilities. Insulate exterior water lines and walls, attics, and doors, and install storm windows to prevent freezing. Stay informed with weather forecasts and emergency alerts to prepare for potential winter storms.
