Who's in your business?

A friend of mine has a thriving medical practice. Over the past decade, she has put her heart, muscle, and money into building it.

As her practice was expanding, she took on an associate to help her handle the volume of work. He was educated from a reputable college, his resume looked good, and he had significant ties to the community. He was charming, intelligent, and presented well during the interview process; so, she took him into the practice.

In short order, it all went to hell in a handbasket. He routinely failed to show up for appointments with patients, and when he did come to work he was confrontational with patients and staff alike. During one of his disappearing acts, I was asked to locate him, and toward that effort, did some background work on him. In under an hour I was able to determine that he had a history of drug arrests and anti-social behavior.

Had she retained a professional investigator to do some homework for her, she would have saved herself untold misery and damage to her practice.

Before you give someone access to the heart of your business or hard-earned assets, know who you are dealing with. Even the most thorough vetting is no guarantee against betrayal; but, you can at least look for warning signs.
