“My daughter’s new swimming teacher is strict, and I love it!”

I didn’t expect a swim lesson to stop me mid-scroll, but that’s the hook of a LinkedIn post I came across this week, and I read the whole thing.

Right before it, I’d gone past “Such a great career day” and “Last week,” (both perfectly nice, and I’m sure the posts were too). Here’s the deal: openers like those tell me where the post is headed before I’ve met anyone in it, so I feel like I already know how it ends and I keep scrolling.

The swimming hook was different. It gave me a specific person. A small moment. An opinion I didn’t see coming. And a reason to find out what happens next (how strict? why does she love it? I needed to know).

I read captions all day for work, so I’ve started writing down the hooks that make me stop. If you run your camp’s or school’s Instagram, I’d bet you have one sitting in your notes app right now, like something the director said to a new family at pickup, or what a counselor told you about the first morning of camp. That’s a hook.

So tell me, what’s the best hook you’ve read lately? I’m keeping a list, and yours might make it.

If you run Instagram for a school or camp, the most useful part of this checklist comes after you count your score.

Start with the first box you left unchecked, even if it looks like the smallest one. Families see your profile from the top down, so a change near the top (a clearer name line, say, or a “Start Here” Highlight) reaches every new family who visits, and most of these fixes take less than ten minutes.

Comment FIRST and I’ll send you the checklist. When you’ve finished, send me your score and your handle in a message, and I’ll reply with the first thing I’d change on your profile.

Two strangers at our hotel in Acadia told us about Pemetic Mountain, and I’d never have found it on my own.

Programs have one of these too. This week, ask a family who joined last year and someone who’s worked at your program for a long time the same question: what’s the one thing you tell friends about us that they can’t find on our website? Whatever comes up more than once is your Pemetic Mountain, and it’s a post waiting to happen.

What’s yours?

By the time a family signs up for your camp or summer program, they’ve usually been thinking about you for months.

When we were choosing a camp for my kids, we started talking about it in the spring, so we could visit while camps were in session and sign up for the following summer.

Not every family plans that far ahead, and plenty of programs run on a shorter timeline. Families are still thinking about next summer this fall, though. Registration may not be open yet, and they’re starting to figure out what their child will do and making sure they don’t miss out on something good.

Either way, a family looking at you in October wants something a little different than they did in July. What’s the question families ask you most this time of year?

Your camp director already knows the answer to the question every new parent asks, and that answer belongs on your Instagram.

Here’s an easy way to try it before registration opens. Ask your director the question families bring up most (the one they could answer in their sleep), and film the answer on a phone in one take. It doesn’t need music or a second try. A parent who’s still deciding is watching for the person who’ll be with their child all summer, and a warm, unpolished answer tells them a lot.

If your director would rather stay off camera for now, a counselor or a longtime staff member works just as well. Introduce them by name in the first line of the caption, so families start to feel like they know them before they ever visit.

What’s the one question every new family asks you?

When I wrote down my own voice, the patterns surprised me. I use parenthetical asides constantly (you’ll find one in almost everything I write), and I open with things I’d say out loud, like “Here’s the deal.” Seeing both on paper made it much easier to catch a draft that didn’t sound like me, whether I’d written it or AI had.

If you’d like to try a small piece of this today, pull up four captions your families loved and read them out loud, one after another. Listen for what repeats, like how you open, how long your sentences run, what you call the kids you serve, and how you sign off. That’s where The Voice Primer starts.

What’s one word or phrase your program uses that no AI tool would ever come up with on its own?

The Voice Primer is $27 while it’s new, and the link is in my bio.

If finding time to think about social media is the hardest part, this is where I’d start. Build the toolbox once, then pull from it all year.

Save this for the next time you have an afternoon to plan.

Social media is non-negotiable for your program now. That doesn’t mean posting every day, or doing more. It means having a plan behind what you post.

Without that plan, none of this happens for you. Families falling for your program before they’ve ever visited. Trust built before the first call. Being remembered by name, weeks later.

What would a plan get you back?
