I recently heard an understandable concern from school leaders:

“We already have so many initiatives underway. We don't have time for another one.”

I agree.

Building independent learners shouldn't require another program or another item on the improvement plan.

It can happen through the work schools are already doing.

📚 A student working toward a reading goal identifies which strategy helped them understand a difficult passage.

➗ A student solving a math problem explains what they tried, where they got stuck, and what they'll do next.

Same academic priorities.

But now students are learning to understand and direct their own learning.

That's the shift.

The goal isn't to add learner agency to the list. The goal is to ensure that everything already on the list helps students become more independent learners.

What a fun first day with our new partner school, St. Joan of Arc!

I spent the day with their faculty exploring how we can develop students who are both critical thinkers AND learners with agency—students who can think deeply, reflect, make decisions, and take increasing ownership of their learning.

I was so impressed by the faculty’s engagement, thoughtful discussion, and willingness to learn together.

But I have to share one thing that made today’s PD especially fun!

The principal scheduled a 90-minute lunch break where teachers could enjoy lunch AND make space-themed welcome signs for their classroom doors to go along with this year’s school theme. 🚀🪐

I’ve done a lot of professional development in a lot of schools, and I’ve never seen this before. I loved it!

It gave everyone a chance to step away from the learning for a little while, be creative, talk, laugh, and enjoy one another’s company. Then we came back together refreshed and ready for the afternoon.

Such a great reminder that adults need opportunities to create, connect, and recharge, too.

Thank you, St. Joan of Arc, for such a warm welcome. I’m excited about Year 1 of our work together!

What a wonderful day at Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School & Academy!

I had such a great time working with their faculty today as they begin Year 1 of a new accreditation cycle. Their academic goal is an awesome one: developing learners who think about their own learning.

We spent the day thinking, talking, reflecting, and exploring ways to help students become more independent and reflective learners. I loved seeing how engaged the faculty was throughout the entire day. Their passion for their students really came through in their conversations and participation.

And there was an extra special surprise for me today—I got to see one of my former students, who is now a member of the faculty! ❤️ As an educator, those full-circle moments are pretty wonderful.

Thank you to the Cardinal Stritch faculty for welcoming me and for such a fun day of learning together. I’m excited to see where you take this work!

What a great day at St. Mary Magdalene School!

I had such a wonderful time working with the faculty for back-to-school today. This is an amazing group of educators—passionate about their students, engaged in their own learning, and willing to think, reflect, share, and try new things.

Their accreditation goal focuses on building independent learners who can think critically, so today we spent time exploring what that goal actually looks like in the classroom and how teachers can intentionally help students become more thoughtful, reflective, and independent in their learning.

As someone who facilitates a lot of professional development, there is nothing better than working with a faculty that is genuinely excited to learn together. Their energy made today so much fun!

I’m especially excited that this is just one part of the journey. I’ll be continuing to work with St. Mary Magdalene for year two as they move forward with their accreditation goal.
