A question for school leaders as we move further into the year:
❓If you walked into classrooms tomorrow, where would you see your school improvement priorities in action?

Schools spend a lot of time developing the plan, identifying priorities, and determining action steps.
But eventually, that work has to reach the classroom.
💡What should teachers be doing differently because of the priorities you identified?
AND:
💡What should students be doing differently?

That’s something we’re looking closely at with our partner schools during fall coaching days. We’re connecting the professional learning and changes in teacher practice to what we’re actually seeing and hearing from students.

Because school improvement isn’t measured simply by what we planned or implemented.
It’s measured by what changes for students.

As you walk classrooms this fall, ask yourself:
👉What evidence do I see that our school improvement priorities are changing the student experience?

Same directions. Four very different results.
It happens quickly during accreditation work.
One team reflects deeply.
One mostly describes what the school already does.
One collects more evidence than it needs.
One focuses on finishing as quickly as possible.

No one is intentionally doing the work incorrectly. Different groups simply interpret and approach the process differently.

That raises an important leadership question:
Who is checking for consistency before all the work comes back at the end?

The goal isn’t simply to distribute the tasks. It’s to create meaningful, distributed leadership with shared expectations and a clear process for bringing the work together.

The right people can still need the right support.

I learned this firsthand when I served as an accreditation steering committee chair.

I had capable people. I had been thoughtful about who served on the team. And we had data.

But the real challenge came when we had to move beyond simply having the information:

Could we recognize patterns?
Identify trends?
Determine what mattered?
Make meaning from what we were seeing?

That experience has stayed with me because choosing capable people for an accreditation team does not automatically mean they feel prepared for every kind of thinking the work requires.

Choosing the right people is an important leadership decision. Preparing them for the work is another.

I love seeing my former university students become classroom teachers! ❤️

There’s something special about seeing people you once taught now leading classrooms of their own.

It’s also a reminder of what we want for all learners: the confidence to think, make decisions, reflect, and keep growing.

You can understand the accreditation process and still struggle to lead your school through it.

Because once the training ends, the process meets reality:

Different people.
Different strengths.
Different levels of comfort with data.
And a principal who is still responsible for running the school.

That’s the part of accreditation I want to talk about.

I recently heard an understandable concern from school leaders:

“We already have so many initiatives underway. We don't have time for another one.”

I agree.

Building independent learners shouldn't require another program or another item on the improvement plan.

It can happen through the work schools are already doing.

📚 A student working toward a reading goal identifies which strategy helped them understand a difficult passage.

➗ A student solving a math problem explains what they tried, where they got stuck, and what they'll do next.

Same academic priorities.

But now students are learning to understand and direct their own learning.

That's the shift.

The goal isn't to add learner agency to the list. The goal is to ensure that everything already on the list helps students become more independent learners.
