Organizing tip of the week: As you take out your holiday decorations to get your homes and Christmas trees decorated, first review your items and donate items you no longer love--especially if you've purchased new items. Then make sure all the decorations are in good shape and throw away broken ones and check light fuses well before your guests arrive! Save tissue or other packing paper to wrap up breakable ornaments to store. And please call if you'd like help putting up or taking down holiday decorations. Organizing tip of the week: I attended a lecture about only using wood cutting boards vs plastic cutting sheets/boards to try to stop microplastics from getting into my food. Instead of throwing away all my plastic cutting sheets, I cut them in half to line all of my grocery sacks providing a more stable base for carting home groceries. I also use more glass jars from spaghetti sauce, etc. to store crackers; pretzels, grains, cereal, etc. Please try to reuse and repurpose instead of putting items in the landfill!

Organizing tip of the week: In one of the free local Toledo city papers, I read about secure document destruction at only $.20/pound (usually it's at least $1/pound or more.) If you miss out on any free shredding events, consider Manahan at 6377 River Crossings, Sylvania at their low per pound price which provides work for adults with disabilities.
Schedule a drop off by calling 419-517-5560.

Join the Toledo Zoo in celebrating Earth Day and our mission of being advocates for wildlife and conserving the natural world during Party for the Planet!

Drop off your recyclable goods – including hard-to-recycle items– between 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Anthony Wayne Trail parking lot. Admission/parking charges do not apply for those just dropping of recyclables.

The Zoo is a perfect place to spend a great "green" day with your family! Deliver your recyclable items, then stay and learn about environmentally-friendly initiatives, conservation efforts, and enjoy animal demonstrations and activities across the Zoo. A list of recycling items list can be found on this link. This is your chance to get rid of a lot of "stuff" you didn't know what to do with!

Organizing tips of the week: Friday, April 25, 2025 is Earth Day. Consider sustainable shopping for clothes by shopping secondhand stores first! And donate your clothes--don't throw them out.

And Saturday, April 26, 2025 is DRUG TAKE BACK DAY. If you have expired or unused medications bring them to the Ottawa Hills police station from 10am-2pm at 2125 Richards Road. They will take narcotics, over the counter meds, pet meds, prescriptions and vitamins. In this manner, the drugs will be disposed of properly. They will not accept syringes, inhalers, liquid meds, ointments/lotions, or items from commercial or medical vendors.

Organizing tip of the week: The process to declutter bathroom cabinets is to remove all items; sort like items (cardboard shoe boxes were used); review items to remind yourself of what you have; make decisions about items to donate or put in the trash and items to keep; then contain in the right-sized containers--repurposing what you have; including a turntable with sides; labeling the containers and placing in a permanent home so you can always find what you're looking for--and use up items you forgot you had! After pictures never do justice as the cleaned out bathroom cabinets were SO much more functional!

Organizing tip of the week: Turntables (also called lazy susans) are at Aldi right now for a great price so grab them before supplies disappear. I love using turntables in kitchen cupboards for spices, oils, and even storing water bottles and cups for hot beverages which tend to tip over easily. In the bathroom, turntables are great for makeup and other health and beauty items. For craft organization for yourself or children, turntables keep crayons, pencils, markers, paint supplies separated when you buy turntables with sides and dividers.

Organizing tip of the week: Many people own or have inherited silver trays, candlestick holders, goblets, etc. And many people no longer entertain in the same way or find that these items fit their current style. IF your silver items are gathering dust and you know you or your family members will never use them and IF they are sterling silver (not silver plate), there is value in making money from a legitimate silver buyer for melt down. It gets the clutter out of your home; you haven't donated valuable items; and you'll be happy with cash in your pocket!

Organizing tip of the Week: I just threw away my black plastic kitchen utensils which I use for cooking. I did not recycle them as you can see why when you read the article below. Plus other sources like CNN advise as well. And I took advantage of online shopping specials to purchase silicone spatulas and spoons geared for high heat cooking. Please take time to review and throw away your black plastic kitchen utensils, plastic cutlery, take out containers, toys, etc. which are proven not to be healthy to use any longer.

Many black plastic kitchen items are made from recycled electronic materials that contain toxic flame retardants and other chemicals.
