During this National Trench Safety Stand-Down, we're spotlighting two of the most common protective systems used in excavations: shoring and shielding.
While both are designed to protect workers, they do so in very different ways.
Shoring helps prevent a trench collapse by supporting the excavation walls and reducing the risk of soil movement.
Shielding uses a trench box to create a protected work area for employees if a collapse occurs.
Despite the fact that these systems are often discussed together, they're not interchangeable. Soil conditions, excavation depth, available space, and the work being performed all play a role in determining which protective system is appropriate.
When it comes to trench safety, knowing what protection is in place and how it works is just as important as having it there in the first place.
This Stand-Down week, take the opportunity to discuss excavation hazards and the protections in place with your crew.
