I occasionally get requests to shape a tree. This always causes me concern as an arborist. Usually this means there is an unrealistic expectation for the final product.
In order to "shape" a tree to meet expectations it usually requires improper pruning techniques. These are bad for the health and longevity of the tree.
Generally, we have to work with what the tree gives us. Some size and shape modifications are possible but in order to truly maintain a given shape you must start in the first few years and maintain it every year. You really can't start with a mature tree and "shape" it.
