Grandma and grandpa every Memorial Day weekend would go out and deliver floral displays to what has now accumulated to over 60 gravesites across northeast Kansas and multiple counties. They’ve never made a public ordeal of it but I find it inspirational, carrying on the memory of so many loved ones over the years. It’s no small task and usually includes several of the ranch ladies constructing and collecting through the year. While we continue passing down the ranch legacy, that’s included so many discussions of ancestry and story telling, we keep in mind some of the best traditions and continue to honor the memory of those gone before us.

Memorial Weekend offers the ability to both celebrate and remember those we’ve lost and loved.
One respected speaker, a descendant of the Exodusters shared the powerful sentiment that “you die twice — once when you are laid in the earth, and again when you are no longer remembered.”
Kathy, and the two oldest granddaughters took time from delivering florals to graves to attend a meaningful memorial at Alma Cemetery honoring the recently identified and commemorated 80 previously unmarked graves, many belonging to Black residents from the Wabaunsee County area. The event also served as a celebration of Black history and the lasting contributions of these community members. Historians and volunteers dedicated countless hours to researching their lives, preserving their stories, and respectfully memorializing each gravesite with headstones or a commemorative stone wall. Potter’s Field, referenced in the Bible, now serves as a place of remembrance for these valued members of the Wabaunsee County community.

Kathy and Chuck were honored to host tours at the Flint Hills Division, both Mission Manor and Stonebridge last week. This wonderful group from Alma was such a delight. Anytime we have a chance to share and talk about Flint Hills history just makes our day! Thanks for spending the day with us!

Mother’s Day at the Ranch
The family legacy at Mission Valley Ranch began back in the 50s. Years of hard work by the grandparents to build, create, lead and work day to day brings us to where we are. Now, land which has a 5 generation span onsite working together, to celebrate with one another. For Mothers Day we were blessed with grandparents, great aunts, parents, children, great grands, nephews and nieces and siblings as we created our first family garden site. 16 sets of hands worked in one way or another. Enjoying popsicles and playing in the hay. Generational legacy on the farm comes with some of the greatest blessings.

We gathered with a couple neighbors and the land manager at Mission Valley Ranch a couple weeks ago for a last effort at a good burn before placing the cattle to pasture. Incredible day! Amazing people. We appreciate everyone’s efforts!

We hear the saying “When the storm chasers are sitting in your drive, that’s when you worry.” Well…

Mission Valley Ranch was safe and sound. Though several of us knuckleheads were outdoors with our heads looking up when the “take shelter” announcements came. Thank you for all of the texts and calls to make sure grandma and the ranch were safe. We are Praying for everyone who has been impacted by tonight’s weather.

Kathleen Hogue
Today we remember Bill, and how very much he is missed.

Bill Hogue

Builder by Trade ~ Cattleman by Heart
"There must be cows in Heaven
Since God didn't let you stay
He needed herd improvement
Only done the cattlemen's way

He needed one with knowledge
Who could analyze each cow
From head to tail to hoof
The way you always knew how

You could look at bulls and heifers
To determine their proper mates
And somehow know their offspring
Would possess the perfect traits

For His best herd improvement
God had the perfect plan
He needed Bill Hogue in Heaven
to become His loyal cattleman."

15 years ago this photo was taken, headed to a conservation dinner where grandpa and grandma were awarded the “Grassland Award” for their stewardship of the land in Wabaunsee County. Today, attending Shawnee County’s Annual Event while the montage of memories fly through my mind. ❤️🙏
