The Beaver Creek Water Trail demonstrates what is possible when communities take a long-term approach to improving paddle access, protecting natural resources, and creating recreational opportunities for people of all abilities.

Legacy Parks Foundation and Knox County recently celebrated the opening of the third and newest BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launch at Karns Landing in Knox County, Tennessee. The project marks another milestone in the development of the 44-mile Beaver Creek Water Trail, which continues a multi-year collaborative partnership between BoardSafe Docks, Beaver Creek Kayak Club, Knox County Parks and Recreation, and Legacy Parks Foundation.

For communities interested in developing an accessible water trail of their own, Beaver Creek offers an important lesson: a successful water trail isn’t created with one launch. It is built strategically over time, with multiple access points that connect people to the water and with one another.

BoardSafe Docks was first introduced to the Beaver Creek Kayak Club in 2021 and provided consultation for access points and waterfront infrastructure along the 44-mile-long creek. The kayak club has grown to more than 7,400 members and has played an important role in building awareness of Beaver Creek as a water trail and recreational hub.

The project demonstrates how environmental stewardship and universal access can work together. By cleaning and protecting the waterway, Beaver Creek has become a popular destination, with strategically placed access points that make it possible for people of all abilities to experience it.

Three Boardsafe launch sites are located approximately 5.5 miles apart, creating a series of opportunities for paddlers to enter, exit, and explore Beaver Creek. This type of strategic spacing is an important consideration for communities developing a water trail. Rather than focusing on a single launch site, planners can look at the entire waterway and identify locations that can eventually create a connected network of safe, usable public access points.

Future BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launches are in the planning phase along the 44-mile creek, continuing the long-term vision of a connected and fully accessible Beaver Creek Water Trail.

He highlights our removal of barriers that prevent people with limited mobility from participating in paddlesports and emphasizes the importance of creating recreational opportunities not simply accessible in name, but designed with features to help people actually get on the water and enjoy the experience.

Accessibility on the water is more than a label. It’s about removing barriers that have prevented people from getting on the water for activities like kayaking and fishing.

BoardSafe Docks has designed and manufactured high-performance aluminum waterfront systems across the country. Our adaptive kayak launch was designed with collaboration from an accessibility coordinator, an environmental engineer, physical therapists, and adaptive paddlers from the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Team River Runner. We didn't design it without input or testing.

Their firsthand experience helped us identify the real barriers wheelchair users face, from reaching the launch with their kayak, to getting into their kayak safely, and getting back out of the water. That collaboration continues to influence our design today.

Please don't choose a launch system that has not been put to the test, or because it looks like ours, or is cheaper. Paddlers of all abilities deserve the right to access the water safely and with confidence. BoardSafe's Adaptive Kayak Launch is so good that our competitors have attempted to copy our launch. Our competitors lack knowledge and expertise regarding the specific needs of paddlers in wheelchairs and are unknowingly excluding those who need accessibility the most. With close to 200 BoardSafe Adaptive Kayak Launches in operation across the United States, BoardSafe has worked hard to accommodate these needs and remove barriers.

The 2026 SOBA Education & Training Symposium is coming to Boise, Idaho, August 24–27, bringing together professionals from across the country who are dedicated to improving and expanding public access to our nation’s waterways. The event brings together state boating officials, consultants, engineers, manufacturers, suppliers, publishers, and other industry professionals working to advance access to both motorized and non-motorized boating.

At the symposium, BoardSafe's Tom Warchol will share insights into the importance of thoughtful procurement and the role manufacturers, engineers, and communities can play in making accessibility an integral part of waterfront development.

Visitors to Lucky Peak State Park near Boise now have a new way to experience the Boise River thanks to a recently completed accessible paddling launch designed and manufactured by BoardSafe Docks.

Officials with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation celebrated the completion of the project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Discovery Park, marking another milestone in Idaho’s commitment to making outdoor recreation accessible to everyone.

The BoardSafe Accessible Kayak Launch is part of a larger riverbank restoration project that transformed the shoreline into a welcoming, universally accessible recreation area. Park improvements include accessible parking, paved pathways and ramps, the adaptive kayak and paddleboard launch, stepping stones leading to the river, and a sandy dog beach where four-legged companions can safely enjoy the water alongside their owners. Norris Dam State Park is now more accessible than ever with the addition of two new waterfront access points at Norris Lake: a BoardSafe Accessible Kayak Launch, designed to make paddling possible for people of all abilities, and a BoardSafe Courtesy Boat Dock. By separating motorized boat traffic from paddle craft, the new courtesy dock also improves safety and enhances the overall boating experience.

At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, TVA representative Brian Ross, highlighted how the project expands public access while supporting the shared commitment of TVA and Tennessee State Parks to provide outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities and protect Tennessee’s natural resources for future generations.
