Sometimes an upgrade just makes sense.

C&R, Inc. was dealing with something many manufacturing facilities know too well: aging lights, burnt-out bulbs, failing ballasts, dark areas, and ongoing maintenance.

What is this giant white sphere doing in a lighting lab?

It’s called an integrating sphere, and it helps engineers measure the performance of a light source.

The inside of the sphere is coated with a highly reflective material. When an LED is tested inside, its light reflects repeatedly throughout the sphere, allowing specialized equipment to measure its total light output and other optical characteristics.

Engineers can use integrating sphere testing to evaluate:

• Total luminous flux (lumens)
• Color temperature (CCT)
• Chromaticity
• Spectral characteristics
• Color rendering performance

Why a sphere? Because LEDs don't necessarily send light equally in every direction. The sphere collects and diffuses that light, allowing engineers to evaluate the total output of the source, not simply take a measurement from one direction.

Reliability Tip

Happy Friday to everyone, today we wanted to share with you something to keep in mind to extend the lifespan of the LEDs you have in your company.

Heat is one of the biggest factors affecting the lifespan and performance of LED components.

When fixtures operate in high-temperature environments or enclosed spaces with limited airflow, excess heat can accelerate component aging and reduce light output over time.

To help maximize performance:

• Ensure fixtures have adequate ventilation.
• Avoid blocking airflow around LED assemblies.
• Select products designed for the ambient temperatures of your application.

Proper thermal management doesn't just extend the life of your LEDs, it helps improve reliability and reduce unexpected maintenance.

When a rail service bay runs 24/7, the lighting can't afford to fail.

That's what one major rail company in Los Angeles was dealing with, old HID fixtures on the bay walls were cracking and dimming from constant outdoor exposure. We replaced 600 of them with our IP67-rated, corrosion-proof LED high bay fixtures (complete with motion sensors), and the difference was immediate: brighter bays, better visibility, and lights built to outlast the old ones by roughly 4x.

When a spec calls for sourcing documentation, "Made in USA" on a spec sheet isn't enough on its own, procurement teams need to verify it. That means asking for CAGE code registration, country of origin details, and clarity on which stages of production happen where.

We get sourcing questions from procurement and engineering teams regularly, and we'd rather have that conversation upfront than leave it ambiguous.

Picking the right LED component isn't always as simple as matching a part number. Voltage tolerances, mounting constraints, ambient temperature ranges, panel cutout sizes, the details add up fast, especially on control panel and industrial applications where there's no room for a second guess.
